The Wolf's Lair in Ketrzyn, Poland

The Wolf's Lair

Hidden deep in a Polish forest, the remains of the Nazi stronghold known as The Wolf's Lair (Wolfsschanze) are slowly being reclaimed by nature, but the room where Operation Valkyrie nearly blew up Hitler with a suitcase bomb can still be found.

Built in 1941, miles removed from the nearest village, The Wolf's Lair was Germany's secret headquarters on the Eastern Front. The heavily fortified concrete bunker buildings were protected behind multiple layers of security and the location of the site was a well-kept secret, ensuring that the Nazi leaders could strategize in relative safety. In fact Hitler would spend the better part of the war's final years at the site. Of course they were mainly looking to protect from outside threats. Thus when a German colonel, looking to put an end to Hitler's mad rule, concocted a plan to assassinate the Führer, he chose The Wolf's Lair as the place to do it.

Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg was able to sneak a suitcase bomb into a meeting room where he knew Hitler would be. Even after the meeting Stauffenberg had planned to set off the bomb in was moved to a different space and a different time, he was able to detonate the bomb with Hitler in the room. Miraculously, and unfortunately Hitler survived the blast with minor injuries. However The Wolf's Lair had been compromised. Given the blast and the swiftly approaching Russian forces, the Nazis abandoned the base by the next year and destroyed most of it with explosives.

Despite the destructive tactics of the Nazis, large portions of the heavily fortified base remained intact and have simply sat amongst their Polish forest surrounds for decades. The ruins are now covered in moss and lichen, but can still be freely visited by anyone with the will to set out into the forest on a hunt for Nazi relics.

Reminder: Register For Small Business Saturday

Just a quick reminder to register your American Express cards for this year's Small Business Saturday.

As I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, this is a promotion whereby American Express card members can register to receive a statement credit for purchases made at eligible small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving (which this year is November 29, 2014). This year, American Express is offering a $10 statement credit for each qualifying transaction, up to three times per card (potentially for a total of $30 of statement credits per card).

Qantas A380 First Class Sydney To Los Angeles

G’day from up top (that is the opposite of down under, right?), mates!

Today my dad and I flew Qantas A380 first class from Sydney to Los Angeles, which I suppose is the beginning of the end of our incredible-beyond-words journey.

As anyone that has looked at award availability trends between the US and Australia knows, Qantas first class award space is really tough to come by. Like, really, really tough. And it only gets tougher when you’re looking for space for two people. That being said, there are some “tricks” to at least maximizing your chances of finding the space, as I’ve written about in the past.

So how good is Qantas first class? Is award space so tough to find simply because of the US to Australia market, because Qantas is the best in the market, or is the product really that damn good? It has been years since I've flown Qantas first class, so I was keen to give them another shot.

Alaska Airlines Will No Longer Be Our “Delta Hack” for Full Mileage Earning on Cheap Tickets

Starting January 1, discounted Delta airlines fares will no longer earn full mileage when crediting to Alaska Airlines. We knew this had to be coming — with Delta moving to a revenue-based frequent flyer earning structure, with miles earned based on ticket price, it was too big of a leak to just let customers credit […]

Happy Thanksgiving And A Giveaway

It's that time of year when we (at least those in the US) take a step back and think about the things for which we are thankful. For me, this Thanksgiving is a time to look back at my accident-- which is now 2 months in the rear view mirror-- and be thankful for all the people who have helped me start to get back on my feet.

In the miles and points world, it's perhaps a little harder to find things we are thankful for, especially given the spate of devaluations of the last year. Sure, we can always take the easy way out and just be thankful they aren't worse -- none of the legacies have gone to revenue-based redemptions yet-- but there are some brights.

Finally, let's kick off the holiday season with a giveaway!

Alaska Flyers Earn More Miles…Unless It’s Delta

I feel like all I do is write about Alaska Airlines.

Alaska just sent out an email with the heading "What's in Store for 2015 Mileage Plan Members." At the bottom of the email is this:

Do you see that shocked look on her face? Well, there's a good reason behind it, but she shouldn't necessarily be surprised considering all the changes to the 2015 Delta SkyMiles program.

In 2015, SkyMiles is going completely revenue based on the earning side of the program, whereby redeemable miles earned will be directly tied to the amount spent on tickets, with higher earning based upon Medallion level and whether or not a member has a co-branded SkyMiles American Express credit card. United quickly copied Delta for their 2015 MileagePlus program.

Does Your Partner Support Your Points Addiction?

Blogging is really hard!

Jotting down random stories when we’re traveling together is one thing, but I have no idea how Ben cranks out 50+ posts a week. Just writing a handful while he’s gone is tough!

He also said I could write about “whatever I wanted,” which is an awful lot of responsibility. I mean, I would love to have a discussion about why it’s so darn difficult to find a travel handbag for women who actually travel, but if Ben saw that headline on his blog he might stop drinking Champagne with me.

So I’m trying to exercise a bit of editorial restraint.

One thing I thought might be interesting to talk about is how to engage your significant other in miles and points. It’s something Ben never really talks about, and Travis’ wife is as much (if not more) of a travel geek than he is. I know a lot of us have trailing or reluctant spouses though, and it’s an area where my perspective is a bit different than theirs.
