Review: KLM Crown Lounge Amsterdam (Schengen-side)

Once we deplaned at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport in the E Gates, we exited through a very efficient passport control and headed toward our connecting gate to Madrid, which were in the C Gates. Schiphol has two KLM Crown Lounges, one of them, the "Schengen Lounge," located between the C and D Gates (where most of the Schengen Area flights depart), and the other, which Ben reviewed last year, located between the E, F and G Gates near the non-Schengen departures. Since our flight was departing closest to the Schengen lounge, we headed there.

Family “Forced” to Sit in Vomit on United Flight: Is It United’s Fault… or Theirs?

A truly disgusting story, and I feel for this family, who found vomit at their seat. I've had similar things happen, and the airline handled things in real-time. United didn't, they offered only that the family could travel the next day. United handled things badly, I think, but was the family really 'forced' into anything?

2,000 Bonus Starpoints Per Tribute Portfolio Stay

Earlier today I wrote about Starwood's newest hotel brand, Tribute Portfolio. The brand's motto is "Stay Independent," and it will consist of boutique independent hotels, primarily in the US and Europe.

So far five Tribute locations have been announced. The first Tribute property will be the Royal Palm South Beach Miami, which will be the only Tribute Property in 2015. Starting in 2016 more properties will be opened, including in Asheville, North Carolina, Nashville, Tennessee, Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina.

To celebrate Starwood's 10th hotel brand, they're offering up to 10,000 bonus Starpoints for eligible paid stays at the Royal Palm South Beach Miami through July 15, 2015. Through this promotion you earn 2,000 bonus Starpoints for each stay, so you can earn a bonus for up to five stays.

British Airways Business Class New York – Paris Less Than $1000 Roundtrip Using a Sale and These Two Easy Tricks.

American, British Airways, and BA's 'OpenSkies' are matching cheap business class prices to Paris. The fares are even cheaper when 2 passengers travel together. BA offers discounts to AARP members (anyone can join) and to British Airways Visa co-brand cardholders. These discounts stack.

I've never seen non-mistake fare business class tickets to Europe cheaper for just one passenger. But when two passengers travel together and stack these discounts, the price is $984 apiece. Wow.

AMAZING DEAL: ~$1,000 Business Class To Europe This Summer On Oneworld

You can fly to Europe this summer for less than $1,000 in business class (and this isn't some scammy headline about redeeming miles for a "free" ticket plus $1,000 in taxes and fees)! ;)

Oneworld has published some amazing business class fares for travel this summer between New York and Paris. This fare seems to be directly competing with all business class airline La Compagnie, which will be flying between Newark and London/Paris as of this summer.

On the surface, business class fares are as low as ~$1,700 roundtrip, which is already an amazing value.

Starwood’s New Tribute Portfolio Independent Hotel Brand

Starwood today announced their latest hotel brand, called Tribute Portfolio Hotels & Resorts.

Tribute Portfolio will be Starwood's 10th brand and second collection of independent hotels, after The Luxury Collection.

What makes Tribute Portfolio different? Well, the brand has the motto "Stay Independent," and the goal is that the Portfolio will consist of independent hotels which don't otherwise fall under one of the other SPG "umbrellas."

This is something I'm really excited about as a Starwood loyalist. I love the elite perks, points, and consistent experience I get when staying at a Starwood property, but I like staying at something that feels a bit more "local." The way I see it, Tribute will combine the best of both worlds, giving me the elite perks and points I'm addicted to, while allowing me to stay at an "independent" hotel.

“My Daughter Saved The Whole Plane”

A reader forwarded me a story from CrownHeights.info which I'm just sort of at a loss of words over. It's a story about a 22 year old woman who was returning from Israel on Transaero.

One of the (many) problems with the story is that she's not actually sharing the story, but instead her father, Rabbi Kalman Weinfeld, is recounting it (which I'm sure is really helpful in terms of accuracy). Here's the story that the father shared:

“My daughter was scheduled to return to New York on Motzai Shabbos from Israel with a stopover in Moscow on Russian airline TransAero. She boarded her flight at Ben Gurion Airport and was seated at the window.

The Singing Oak in New Orleans, Louisiana

Sitting beneath the Singing Oak.

The expansive branches of the Singing Oak, or Chime Tree, provide shade and coordinated melodies from the beautiful wind chimes hung from the giant oak by local artist Jim Hart.

The Singing Oak is perched in the heart of City Park, just down the road from the New Orleans Museum of Art. During the summer, the oak provides a reprieve from the sultry Louisiana heat, and enchanting tunes from the wind chimes strung from the branches. The chimes are all tuned to ring out in the pentatonic scale, and are painted black so as to blend in with the natural shadows of the arbor. The chimes range in size, with one of the instruments reaching a length of 14 feet long. The harmonious effect is that of a relaxing, tinkling symphony.

Although the Singing Oak is in plain sight of visitors, not many people know about this hidden New Orleans gem. Take a few minutes to sit beneath the Chime Tree and walk away just a little bit more relaxed than when you arrived.
