American Will Honor $22 Business Class Shanghai Fares — $0 Beijing Fares Remain a Question

On Tuesday evening American published fares of $0 and $22 plus taxes and fees for business class between Washington DC and both Beijing and Shanghai. For the most part, the expectation has been that: American would honor the fare for those who ticketed American would not honor the fare for those who merely held the […]

Revealed: American’s Internal Memo On China Fares

At this point you're surely all familiar with American's ~$450 roundtrip business class fare between Washington and Beijing, which they published for a few hours last night.

American has been quiet, and up until now all we've been able to do is speculate about the fate of our tickets.

While not necessarily current info as of this evening, JonNYC at Traveling Better has the internal memo from this morning, which American sent out to agents.

Here's the first update, which went out at 7:20AM this morning:

The New Super Chic Air France Safety Video, and 5 Reasons Why These Videos are Great Investments

Air France has a new ‘super chic’ safety video. I’ve not been keen to fly them in recent times (mostly because of how long it’s taken for them to start rolling out a lie flat business class), but I kind of like this video. My first five thoughts watching it: I wish Air France crews […]

Will American Honor Cheap Business Class Tickets To Asia?

Last night American published some amazing ~$450 roundtrip business class fares between Washington and Beijing. The fare was pulled after a few hours, though not before hundreds of people managed to book.

The trend as of late when we see these types of mistake fares is that the airlines issue an official statement very quickly about whether they'll honor them or not. Per DOT regulations it seems pretty clear that American will have to honor them, but I guess we'll see.

But we haven't heard from American. Why?

I have two theories:

Are Qatar Airways A380 First Class Awards Ever Available?

I know I'm not the only person in this hobby that's mildly addicted to the A380. As far as the "big three" Middle Eastern carriers go, I know many have already booked Emirates A380 First Class and Etihad A380 First Class Apartments, though snagging Qatar Airways A380 First Class seems to be more challenging.

Some people come to the conclusion that Qatar Airways doesn't release A380 first class award space, and they're not that far off.

First of all, keep in mind that Qatar Airways only flies the A380 on select frequencies to London, Paris, and Bangkok.

Furthermore, Qatar Airways is extremely inconsistent with how they release A380 first class award space. While first class award seats are pretty easy to snag on their other three cabin planes, the A380 is tricky. It's true that sometimes they don't seem to show any A380 first class award space. But other times they do.

Review: The Airport Hotel Doha Hamad International Airport

One of the nice new features of the Hamad International Airport is that it has a transit hotel that's airside. It's so convenient to have a hotel that's past security so that when you wake up you can shower and head straight to the gate.

The last time I had an overnight in Doha I stayed at the Crowne Plaza Doha, which is one of the closer hotels to the airport. Still, that's significantly less convenient than staying airside.

In this case we arrived at 10:40PM and were departing at 7:40AM. We wanted to be at the gate early for the inaugural A350 flight, so it would be a short night.

I decided to book The Airport Hotel at Hamad International Airport. The rate for a basic room on their website was 800QAR (~$220). A friend alerted me that if you're only staying for up to eight hours they'll bump the rate down to 640QAR (~$175). It requires emailing the hotel, but they seem to respond pretty quickly.

Best Way To Redeem Miles To Greece?

I answer dozens of questions a week on the "Ask Lucky" page of the blog, and sometimes I think it makes sense to expand on the questions by answering them here. While the questions might be specific, I think the thought process used in figuring out which award is best can be applicable to a lot of situations.

My fiancee and I live in Los Angeles. For our honeymoon, we were thinking of going to Greece. We’d like to fly first or business class (we’ve never done it before!) We figure since we’re saving for this special occasion, we want to go with a really great product.

Can American Cancel Held Reservations Within 24 Hours?

I posted yesterday about American's amazing ~$450 roundtrip business class fares between Washington and Beijing, which were available for a few hours.

Tickets were issued and so far we haven't officially heard whether they'll honor the fares or not. I suspect they will, since this does seem to fall pretty clearly within the Department of Transportation's prohibition on post-purchase price increases, and there was no "trickery" involved here.

So far everyone I've heard from that issued a ticket has their reservation intact. However, many people that held these tickets are reporting that they're being canceled. Last night I specifically recommended issuing these tickets rather than holding them if you really do want to take the trip. But then again, a lot of people don't listen to me, and are surprised this morning. ;)

Who Needs Business Cards When You Have Model Airplanes?

The always awesome Scott Mayerowitz of the Associated Press published a fun story today, entitled "Airline world's tiny secret: infatuation with model planes."

I figured the article would be about model airplanes as such. Back in the day (before I perpetually wandered) I collected model airplanes. Who wouldn't want to adorn their living room with Lufthansa's 747 and EVA Air's Hello Kitty A330?

But the article is actually about the role that model airplanes play within the industry, when it comes to closing deals, which I didn't realize was a thing.
