Ralph Nader’s Letter to United CEO Jeff Smisek

Ralph Nader — a truly important voice in the 1960s and 1970s, who hasn’t been relative since 1992 — wrote an open letter to United CEO Jeff Smisek. “It Can’t Hurt To Ask” When Traveling — True Or False?

Obviously everyone approaches life differently, and there's no place that's more apparent than in the travel industry.

Perhaps contrary to how I sometimes come off on the blog, I'm generally pretty quiet and try to be cognizant of my surroundings. Many might say I take it to an extreme. I hate talking in elevators, because I don't want to disrupt others, and I won't even talk on my phone in an Uber without asking the driver. I realize I'm an extreme case, but stay with me here...

From observing how others travel, there's one area where I've noticed an especially stark contrast.

Traveling on Separate Tickets: How Checked Bags and Protection During Irregular Operations Work With American and oneworld

The 8 Best Complimentary Spa Treatments In Airport Lounges

There aren't many things more relaxing than a nice spa treatment before a longhaul flight. While many airports have paid massage facilities, rarely are they actually relaxing given the terminal background noise.

So I figured I'd compile a list of what I consider to be the best complimentary spa treatments available in airport lounges. The list is just based on lounges I've been to, and as always, your mileage may vary. I'll also add that I'm only including one lounge per airline. In many cases airlines have more than one lounge with spa treatments, though I'll just include the lounge where I had the best experience.

With that in mind, what do I consider to be among the world's best complimentary airport lounge spa treatments?

$99 Helicopter Transfers Between NYC And Airports Now Bookable

Several weeks ago I wrote about Gotham Air, which I suppose is trying to be the new Uber or Silvercar of New York City helicopter transfers. They don't operate the helicopters themselves, but rather facilitate it through their app and website. I guess you could say they're a helicopter-sharing tech company.

They cut the commute between NYC and JFK/EWR airports down to six minutes.

While their fares are $199-219 each way (which isn't horrible, in my opinion), they have introductory rates of $99 when you enter promotion code LAUNCH at the time of booking. The promotion code is apparently only valid for bookings through tomorrow, Tuesday, February 17, 2015.

Alaska Offering Double Miles In Select Markets Through May 15, 2015

As part of the never-ending "Battle in Seattle" between Alaska and Delta, Alaska is offering Mileage Plan members double redeemable miles (not elite qualifying miles) for travel between February 15 and May 15, 2015.

The promotion is only valid for nonstop travel in the following markets out of Seattle and Salt Lake City.

As you can see, the promotion includes some of Alaska's most popular markets, like Seattle to Anchorage, Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc. Clearly this promotion is being run due to the overlap between them and Delta in many of these markets.

Emirates Will Start Flying The A380 Between The US And Europe

In October 2013, Emirates launched service between New York and Dubai via Milan. The awesome thing about the route is that you can fly it exclusively between New York and Milan if you want, since they have pick-up rights.

Of course US and European airlines weren't a fan of the route, since in many ways Alitalia, American, and Delta can't compete with Emirates.

Well, it looks like Emirates is stepping up their game even further. As of June 1, Emirates will fly an Airbus A380 on their New York to Dubai route, which connects in Milan.

Cathay Pacific Offers The World’s Most Consistent First Class Product

Back in the day I used to fly Cathay Pacific first class so much that it almost became my second home. But lately I've been trying to avoid them a bit for a couple of reasons:

-- They don't have wifi, which is both a blessing and a curse (perhaps slightly more of a curse on 16+ hour flights)

-- I've flown them so often and wanted to try more airlines

My last Cathay Pacific first class flight was from New York to Vancouver last March, and prior to that I flew them from Chicago to Hong Kong the previous June.

Delta Is Flying A Domestic Plane To Iceland This Summer

Delta deserves a lot of credit for what a global network they have. One of their coolest flights which I wish other airlines would operate is their seasonal service between New York and Reykjavik, Iceland. I'm really surprised other airlines haven't picked it up, since seasonally Iceland is a super-popular destination, and it's no further from New York than a transcon.

At this point I think it's unlikely we'll see more immediate expansion from US airlines given that WOW Air is starting flights between the US and Iceland, and they have super cheap fares, which will surely drive the prices down.

Anyway, Delta will once again be resuming their seasonal Iceland service this year, which will operate between May 1 and September 27, 2015. Historically the flight has been operated by a Boeing 757-200, featuring Delta's old BusinessElite recliner seats.

Have You Won Up To $500 In Hyatt Gift Cards?

As I mentioned last week, I’ll be speaking at the upcoming Frequent Traveler University, which is one of a series of events intended to share the intricacies of the miles and points hobby. The next major one will be held at the Hyatt Regency DFW April 17-19, 2015.

While I’m not responsible for organizing the event, I do choose and put together my own presentations. For the most part, I’ve stuck to “tried and true” topics, and have generally focused on mileage running as a way to earn miles, along with tricks for redeeming miles.

That being said, there’s a huge range of topics in this hobby, and I’m always up for exploring new concepts in more detail. The other speakers feel similarly, but it’s hard to gauge what people find most interesting when there’s such a diverse group of attendees.
