Etihad Residence Butler Details Revealed

Later this year Etihad will begin service with their Airbus A380. It will be debuting on the Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow route as of December 27, 2014. Quite possibly the most innovative aspect of the product is The Residence, which is a three room, 125 square foot suite consisting of a private living room, bedroom, and shower.

Nothing like it has ever been done in commercial aviation before, and as you might expect it's priced to reflect that.

One of the unique features of The Residence is that you have a private Savoy trained butler. I was curious what exactly would go into training these butlers and what their backgrounds would be, and it looks like we finally have some new information.

I Heart My City: Yasmine’s Rabat

Rabat native Yasmine El Baggari has always been a dreamer. Her desire to discover the great unknown led her to America in 2010, and from there her dreams kept getting bigger. First, she set out to visit all 50 states (she's covered more than two thirds so far). Now she's on a 15-country journey around the globe to continue her quest to break down cultural barriers and stereotypes through travel. But no matter where Yasmine is, her hometown pride comes with her. Here are her favorite things about Morocco's capital city.

Qatar Airways First A380 Delivered

I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad that the Qatar Airways A380 Real Housewives-esque drama may be over.

For anyone that has been following the drama (in other words, for anyone that has been reading my blog), Qatar Airways has perpetually been delaying the delivery of their A380s due to some "interior" problems.

For months, Qatar Airways delayed their A380 service on a super-frequent basis as Airbus worked to fix the issues:

Why You Should Write

“That’s the promise: you will live more curiously if you write. You will become a scientist, if not of the natural world than of whatever world you care about. More of that world will pop alive. You will see more when you look at it. Writing needn’t be a formal enterprise to have this effect.…

UNESCO World Heritage Site #277: Pre-Hispanic City of Chichen-Itza

From the World Heritage inscription: The town of Chichen-Itza was established during the Classic period close to two natural cavities (cenotes or chenes), which gave the town its name “At the edge of the well of the Itzaes”. The cenotes facilitated tapping the underground waters of the area. The dates for this settlement vary according [...]

Infant Award Travel

It's Wednesday, which means we'd typically have a post from my friend Travis, who had been writing a weekly series with a somewhat different perspective than mine. As a follow up to his post on traveling with a lap child, he's been drafting a post on infant flight charges when traveling on an international award ticket.

Unfortunately, Travis was in a bit of a mountaineering accident this weekend, and while he's going to be okay, it's going to be a few weeks before he can get back to work, much less blogging. I don't want to ruin the story for him, but he has promised a trip report from a Blackhawk helicopter, so it sounds like it was pretty exciting.

In the meantime, there are a few posts he's drafted that we'll try to publish over the next few weeks, but he probably won't be responding to comments and such for a bit. We'll see how it goes.

Data Security is a Huge Gap in Frequent Flyer Programs. But Not One Members Actually Care About.

Delpitte Consulting released a new study today (.pdf) suggesting that travelers do not trust the data security policies and practices of loyalty programs. My take: Deloitte wants to convince loyalty programs to hire them to bolster their privacy and data security. They’d also love it if media picked this up and created pressure for companies […]

Politician Delays Flight And Is Then Forced To Deplane

Here's a fun story of a Pakistani politician that delayed a flight from Karachi to Islamabad by over two hours. The claim was that the plane had a technical fault, but once the passengers realized the plane was being held for a politician, they got angry and more or less refused to let him board.

Via NDTV:

"A mobile video clip showing Pakistani politician Rehman Malik being virtually chased away by airline passengers furious at being forced to wait over two hours for him has gone viral."
