Should You Sacrifice 20k Ultimate Rewards Points?

As I'm sure everyone knows by now, there's an increased 70,000 Ultimate Rewards points sign-up bonus on the Ink Plus® Business Credit Card. In order to earn the points you have to spend $5,000 within three months, and the $95 annual fee on the card isn't waived. The increased sign-up offer expires this Sunday, October 19, 2014.

Interestingly the same increased sign-up bonus isn't available on the Ink Bold® Business Charge Card. The card has virtually identical benefits, with the only major difference being that it's a charge card, meaning you can't carry a balance (which you shouldn't be doing anyway, in my opinion). The sign-up bonus on that card is 50,000 Ultimate Rewards Points with the same spend requirement, though the $95 annual fee is waived the first year.

Which card should you apply for, the Ink Plus or Ink Bold? The answer seems obvious on the surface, since one has an increased sign-up bonus, while the other doesn't.

However, the slight complication is that rumor has it that the Ink Bold will be discontinued at some point. I don't have any inside information on whether that's true or not, so have no clue on the timeline on that if it were to happen.

I Heart My National Park: Guadalupe Mountains

The Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas were once a reef growing beneath the waters of an ancient inland sea. That same vanished sea spawned the honeycomb of the Carlsbad Caverns, just 40 miles north in New Mexico. Here's Keene Haywood's insider guide to this natural wonder.

When Do Lufthansa Miles Expire?

I'm frequently asked about Lufthansa's mileage expiration policy. Most airlines publish pretty straightforward mileage expiration policies, though Lufthansa is an exception.

In general Lufthansa Miles & More miles expire 36 months after they're issued. At least that's the simple answer. The slightly longer answer (which works in our favor) is that they expire at the end of the quarter 36 months after they're issued. In other words, if you earn miles in October 2014 they expire in December 2017.

Unlike with other airlines, that policy is based on when the miles are earned and not based on when you last had mileage activity. With the major US programs you can keep your miles "alive" just by having some qualifying activity every so often (usually every ~18 months). With Lufthansa, however, miles typically expire regardless of when your last activity was, but rather exclusively based on when they were earned.

Plan in Advance When You’ll Begin to Worry About Something

Before a big talk, I used to stress out for weeks. The feeling began with a sense of being unsettled (and not the good kind). I was anxious and unsure of how to resolve it. Finally, at least a few days beforehand, the talk took over my mind and became all I could think about.…

Who Will Be Connecting More On The New American?

@GlobeTrotScott Tweeted part of a newsletter American sent out to their employees recently.

It's titled "Hub Rollcall," and explains how "each hub plays to a particular strength in our network."

How they describe each hub says a lot about what we can expect going forward:

"Charlotte/CLT: Provides customers with domestic connections and access along the East Coast; well-suited to serve international destinations that complement oneworld and AJB partners' networks"

The 5 Things You Must Ask Every Time You Check Into a Hotel

Back in June, Chris McGinnis offered 5 smart questions to ask at check-in. These were mostly questions about your room. It was advice to avoid connecting rooms (noise) and ADA rooms (messy showers), and also to make sure your frequent guest number is on file. All good, basic stuff, but you can do better. You […]
