Falling in Love with the Land of Elves

As we stared up at the sky, patches of neon and dark green changed to light pink and back to green. They came out of nowhere, hung like curtains on invisible hangers, and danced a duet to an unheard symphony They would appear, vanish, and reappear all over the sky. My companions, Lulu and Germaine, (two friends from France spending the week driving around Iceland) and I stared, bewildered, as the northern lights danced above us. It was the first […]

China Eastern 777-300ER To Los Angeles Starting February 2015

China Eastern doesn't historically have a very good reputation, in particular for their first and business class products available on their longhaul fleet. Their Airbus A340-600 aircraft, which they fly on 14+ hour flights, are downright nasty compared to what the competition is offering. On the plus side, their A330-200 aircraft are a bit better, as they do feature fully flat seats.

Back in September I wrote about China Eastern's brand new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which look stunning.

Here's a video of the cabins on the new 777-300ER.

Has Hyatt Discontinued The Diamond Challenge?

There's a bit of panic in our corner of the interwebs this morning, after Kyle at Upgrd reported that the Hyatt Diamond Challenge is "dead."

I've written extensively in the past about the Hyatt Diamond Challenge -- it's hands down the most lucrative hotel status challenge out there. Historically, in order to qualify for a Hyatt Diamond Challenge you just needed to be an elite member with Hilton, IHG Rewards Club, Marriott, or Starwood, and be able to prove that you've made one stay with them. So if you had hotel elite status through a credit card and made one stay, you were eligible.

To complete a Diamond Challenge you had to stay 12 nights within 60 days. But what made this so generous was that:

Starwood Adds a New Airline Crossover Rewards Partner, Hyatt Eliminates Status Challenges, Citi to Give You Your Credit Score, and American Updates Award Rules

News and notes from around the interweb: Barclaycard was on this a year ago. (HT: Million Mile Secrets) The Trip Sherpa is reporting that Hyatt’s fast track to top tier elite status, which was easily abused, has been eliminated. I’ve reached out to confirm this, and if true to see whether they are replacing it […]

Emirates And Starwood Partnership In The Works?

It's interesting (though not surprising) that beyond the traditional "alliances," we're seeing a lot more partnerships in the airline and hotel industry nowadays. And in particular that we're seeing close partnerships between the airline and hotel industry as well.

For example, in early 2013, Delta and Starwood introduced Crossover Rewards, whereby under certain circumstances members receive reciprocal benefits and points when traveling with the partner airline or hotel.

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. An airline's best customers are potentially a hotel chain's best customers, so why not link up with a partnership? United and Marriott clearly thought it was a good idea, because they introduced RewardsPlus a few months later.

Well, it seems like this Starwood airline partnership might soon extend beyond Delta.
