TSA seizes guns, crossbows

Taking loaded guns to the airport without permission isn't a good idea. Airport security will likely seize it, and you could be subject to criminal and civil penalties.

Alaska Airlines Will No Longer Be Our “Delta Hack” for Full Mileage Earning on Cheap Tickets

Starting January 1, discounted Delta airlines fares will no longer earn full mileage when crediting to Alaska Airlines. We knew this had to be coming — with Delta moving to a revenue-based frequent flyer earning structure, with miles earned based on ticket price, it was too big of a leak to just let customers credit […]

Happy Thanksgiving And A Giveaway

It's that time of year when we (at least those in the US) take a step back and think about the things for which we are thankful. For me, this Thanksgiving is a time to look back at my accident-- which is now 2 months in the rear view mirror-- and be thankful for all the people who have helped me start to get back on my feet.

In the miles and points world, it's perhaps a little harder to find things we are thankful for, especially given the spate of devaluations of the last year. Sure, we can always take the easy way out and just be thankful they aren't worse -- none of the legacies have gone to revenue-based redemptions yet-- but there are some brights.

Finally, let's kick off the holiday season with a giveaway!

I Heart My City: Erin’s Williamsburg

Nat Geo Young Explorer Erin Spencer is a marine scientist with a curious fascination with invasive lionfish and tri-cornered hats. After visiting Virginia's Historic Triangle every year as a child, she ended up moving to Williamsburg to attend William & Mary. Though she now lives in D.C., she takes frequent trips to satisfy her colonial cravings. Here are some of Erin's favorite things about her home away from home.

Which Hotel Credit Cards Offer the Most Free Nights?

Hotel credit card sign-up bonuses either come in the form of points or a certain number of nights, with varying restrictions on when and where those nights can be redeemed. Sometimes cardholders even get both points and a certain number of nights. Bonuses are generally very generous, with at least one two-free-nights certificate issued. But […]

Alaska Flyers Earn More Miles…Unless It’s Delta

I feel like all I do is write about Alaska Airlines.

Alaska just sent out an email with the heading "What's in Store for 2015 Mileage Plan Members." At the bottom of the email is this:

Do you see that shocked look on her face? Well, there's a good reason behind it, but she shouldn't necessarily be surprised considering all the changes to the 2015 Delta SkyMiles program.

In 2015, SkyMiles is going completely revenue based on the earning side of the program, whereby redeemable miles earned will be directly tied to the amount spent on tickets, with higher earning based upon Medallion level and whether or not a member has a co-branded SkyMiles American Express credit card. United quickly copied Delta for their 2015 MileagePlus program.

United Has Started Requiring Proof of Addresses Changes to Places Outside the U.S.

Delta requires minimum spending in order to earn elite status in addition to the required miles you have to fly. And since Delta does, United does also. Both airlines allow you to avoid the requirement if you spend $25,000 or more in a year on their co-brand credit cards (United won’t let you avoid the […]

Is a Quest Better if it Helps Others?

I got an interesting question from Allan about the nature of quests: I really enjoyed “The Happiness of Pursuit.” It appealed to the adventurer in me. I understand that you are encouraging others to pursue whatever quest they are passionate about, but my question is, “Do you notice that people who pursue quests that give…

The Siren Song of Singapore

Even in the most sweltering months of my Singaporean girlhood, the outdoors called to me. I’d clamber onto a bus, flash my school bus card, hope for a window seat and perhaps a whiff of a breeze, and settle in for the stuffy ride east. Densely packed apartment buildings and car-clogged streets would gradually give…
