The Journey of a Story

For writers who despair when a story doesn’t start smoothly or when the words don’t flow, I thought it might be helpful to relate the journey of my most recent story, which was about a one-week stay in Cambodia, and which ended up taking me a month to write.

Emirates Will Start Flying The A380 Between The US And Europe

In October 2013, Emirates launched service between New York and Dubai via Milan. The awesome thing about the route is that you can fly it exclusively between New York and Milan if you want, since they have pick-up rights.

Of course US and European airlines weren't a fan of the route, since in many ways Alitalia, American, and Delta can't compete with Emirates.

Well, it looks like Emirates is stepping up their game even further. As of June 1, Emirates will fly an Airbus A380 on their New York to Dubai route, which connects in Milan.

3 Months of Double Miles on Alaska Seattle and Salt Lake Routes

Alaska Airlines is offering double miles on several Seattle and Salt Lake City routes for travel through May 15. Here are the routes: Registration required. I love that as other programs devalue, Alaska sees its mileage program as a competitive weapon. (HT: Frequent Flyer Bonuses)

Cathay Pacific Offers The World’s Most Consistent First Class Product

Back in the day I used to fly Cathay Pacific first class so much that it almost became my second home. But lately I've been trying to avoid them a bit for a couple of reasons:

-- They don't have wifi, which is both a blessing and a curse (perhaps slightly more of a curse on 16+ hour flights)

-- I've flown them so often and wanted to try more airlines

My last Cathay Pacific first class flight was from New York to Vancouver last March, and prior to that I flew them from Chicago to Hong Kong the previous June.

The Japanese Tradition That Encourages Us to Be Present

More supporting evidence for my new focus on units of momentary happiness: “Japanese tradition tells of ichi-go ichi-e, a concept fortified over centuries of practice that says we only have one meeting, at one time—our experiences with one another stand alone. Every encounter we have—a dinner, a shared bottle of wine, a late evening of…

Hogmanay: Edinburgh’s Amazing New Year’s Celebration

I hate New Year’s Eve. To me, it’s the non-holiday holiday. A night out where bars have an excuse to overcharge you, people get excited for a twenty second countdown, and you realize after the clock turns over that life is still the same. New Year’s Eve is just another night out for me. I typically spend the “holiday” with my friends in some foreign country and am home shortly after midnight. I don’t see what the fuss is about. […]
