It turns out, if you want to get incredible footage of a volcanic lava pool, you have to sacrifice a few drones.

Club Carlson Offering Targeted Triple Points Promotion

I usually don't write about targeted promotions, but I think the context on this one is sufficiently interesting to warrant a post.

Back in the day Hyatt offered a "Faster Free Nights" promotion year after year, which is arguably the most lucrative promotion the hotel industry has ever seen. For every two stays you'd make you'd earn one free night at any Hyatt in the world. Two nights at your local $80 per night Hyatt would earn you a free night at the $1,000+ per night Park Hyatt Sydney.

And that was only the beginning, since at the time there were tons of stackable bonuses. Hyatt was literally paying you to stay at their hotels.

Seeing the World in a Weekend – Jakarta, Indonesia

Selecting Jakarta, Indonesia as our latest destination was truly overestimating the amount of travel that can be accomplished in a long weekend. With 44 hours on the plane (26 of which were in business class and 18 in coach) and 29 hours on the ground (half of which we spent sleeping), the trip was an […]

Costco Replaces American Express With Citi For Exclusive Agreement

A few weeks ago it was announced that American Express and Costco will be terminating their relationship as of March 31, 2016:

“We are proud of the value created over many years for Costco, for our Card Members and for our shareholders,” said Kenneth I. Chenault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Express. “Taking a very disciplined approach, we began discussions on a possible renewal with Costco well in advance of the contract expiration. However, we were unable to reach terms that would have made economic sense for our Company and shareholders. Instead, we will focus on opportunities in other parts of our business where we see significant potential for growth and attractive returns over the moderate to long term.”

Manufacture 14.3 Billion Miles With Credit Cards, How Many Cards Can You Get from Each Bank, and the Real Reason the A380 Fails?

News and notes from around the interweb: How many credit cards will each bank let you have? Air Tahiti Nui buying 2 Boeing 787s. The Papeete-based carrier which flies to Tokyo, Auckland, Los Angeles and Paris (via Los Angeles) will use them to replace A340s. We can probably expect a new lie flat business class […]

My Favorite Place in Ireland: The Wild West

For more than a quarter of a century I’ve traveled Ireland's western coast, up from the filigreed fringe of west Cork, along the lakes of Killarney, to the world-class golf links of Ballybunion and Lahinch, to Yeats country in Sligo, meeting people that give me yet another reason to come back.

Review: Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen

After a couple of nights at the perfectly functional Radisson Blu Scandinavia Copenhagen, it was time to head over to the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen, which is generally more highly rated.

For our two night stay the rate was either 1595DKK (~$240) or 50,000 Gold Points per night.

Since I have the Club Carlson Premier Rewards Visa Signature® Card, the second night of every award redemption is free. That means my two night would only cost me 50,000 points. That's a heck of a deal, given that it would have otherwise cost me almost $500 for the two night stay.

The Radisson Blu Royal really is in the heart of the city, as it's right across from the central train station and Tivoli Gardens, which is the second oldest amusement park in the world.

The Last Hotel Internet Domino Falls. Hilton Will Offer Free WiFi, But There Are Catches…

IHG Rewards came out with internet for everyone a year ago (though of course most of their hotels already gave it to everyone as a brand standard, only the upper-tier ones did not and in certain regions). And Marriott announced this two months ago, with a restriction of having to book through Marriott channels. Starwood […]
