Are Thailand’s Airlines Unsafe?

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recently completed an audit of Thailand's Civil Aviation Authority, during which they found some troubling policies.

Via Reuters:

"One aviation source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters that significant safety concerns had been uncovered during an audit of Thailand's civil aviation authority by the Montréal-based International Civil Aviation Organization.

The source said the ICAO's concerns revolved around the issue of operator certificates to carriers by the Thai authority. While the ICAO cannot "downgrade" states, its audits identify concerns that could lead countries to take steps such as banning flights."

Fear, Risk and Travel

Last week 17 tourists were killed by gunmen in Tunisia. You probably heard about it as it was all over the news. You probably remember the case of Natalee Holloway who disappeared in 2005 in Aruba. You remember it because it was all over the news. Every year there are one or two news stories [...]

New York Police Officer Unleashes Rant on Uber Driver

There’s a video going around of an incident yesterday in New York where a police officer unleashes a rant on an Uber driver (“How long have you been in this country? … The only reason you’re not in handcuffs and going to jail .. is because I have things to do.. because you’re not important […]

Apparently You Can Earn Bonus Miles For Dining — Who Knew?!

I'll be the first to admit I'm not as "hardcore" in this hobby as I used to be. That's partly because I have more going on in my life now than when I was 16.

Back in the day I would go out of my way to earn bonus miles for virtually every purchase. $5 online purchase? I would spend 15 minutes trying to decide which shopping portal to go through. Over time I've kind of included the value of time in deciding whether or not to take advantage of various opportunities to generate miles.

As many of you probably know, most of the major airlines offer bonus miles for dining at select restaurants through Rewards Network.

Basically you register your credit card, and then for dining at select restaurants you earn 3-5 bonus miles per dollar spent (and sometimes there are promotions on top of that).

A Postcard From Colombia’s Final Frontier

In the course of researching where I wanted to go in Colombia, the place I looked forward to visiting most was the Guajira Peninsula, a vast, arid desert that juts out into the Caribbean Sea like a fisted forearm.

Chase Extends the IHG Limited-Time Offer!

It happens occasionally, and I wish I knew why a bank will extend a limited-time offer. Chase just did so with the IHG 70K sign-up bonus offer. At times, these sort of extensions make bloggers look like we don’t have the most current info, but in fact, the banks just don’t tell us! I guess […]

IHG Rewards Club Credit Card 70K Sign-Up Bonus Extended Through May 31, 2015

In early March I wrote about the 70,000 point sign-up bonus on the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card, which was only supposed to be available through March 31, 2015. Well, it's worth noting that this sign-up bonus has now been extended through May 31, 2015.

The card offers a 70,000 point sign-up bonus after spending $1,000 within three months of account opening, provided you haven’t received the bonus in the past 24 months. The annual fee on the card is $49, though it’s waived the first year.

As a reminder, this is one of the most compelling hotel credit cards out there. While I don't value it that much for everyday spend, it's a card I'm holding onto long term. Why?
