How Good Is Cathay Pacific Longhaul Business Class?
Hello from New York! While I had an amazing time in the Maldives, it’s nice to be back “home” (whatever that means).
As you guys know, I flew Cathay Pacific business class home from the Maldives, thanks to the cheap business class fares they publish between Male and New York. So over the weekend I flew from Male to Hong Kong to Newark.
Up until now I’ve never reasonably been able to justify flying Cathay Pacific business class rather than first class. When redeeming American miles for travel between the US and Asia, the cost for first class is only 12,500 miles more one-way than the cost of business class. Given all the extra services, booking first class is a no brainer.
That being said, in the interest of the blog, there’s value in reviewing Cathay Pacific business class:

American’s New Lounge Design Revealed With Unexpected Wood Walls
In the midst of a pretty standard piece on airline lounges, Bloomberg drops a photo that looks pretty significant -- a new design I don't think we've seen before. (They don't seem to realize what it is that they have..!)

Emirates’ US Growth Continues — Second Daily Boston Flight Announced
While Emirates in general is growing at an extremely fast pace, it seems like their US growth lately has been almost unparalleled. Just so far this year:
-- Emirates will be adding a second daily Dubai to Seattle flight as of July 7, 2015
-- Emirates will be adding a Dubai to Orlando flight as of October 1, 2015
-- Emirates will be upgrading their New York to Milan flight to an A380 as of June 1, 2015
-- Emirates added a fourth daily flight to New York as of March 8, 2015
While I get the added capacity to New York, the new Orlando route announcement caught me off guard. The addition of a second daily Dubai to Seattle flight kind of surprised me as well, since that's a route they've only added in the past few years.

Four Koalas Flying from Australia to the Singapore Zoo in Qantas “Koala Class”
Qantas will be flying four koalas from Brisbane, Australia to Singapore where they will eventually join the Singapore Zoo. On loan from Australia as a symbol of friendship between the two countries, the 6-month gift could become permanent.
Transporting them requires custom-built shipping capsules that are climate-controlled and with a tree and eucalyptus leaves. Qantas, though, says they'll be flying "koala class." And they have photos...

Babies On A Plane!
I've just wrapped up an incredibly relaxing one week vacation in the Maldives. I'm usually not much the relaxing type, but for the first time I can remember I was able to truly unwind, and I'd return in a heartbeat.
The only downside to the trip was that I caught a cold the second day I got there. It must have been my crazy outbound routing, combined with getting virtually no sleep the first night I was in the Maldives.
So I wasn't feeling 100% yesterday when I left due to being in the final stages of a cold, combined with being sunburned and having some bug bites.
After flying from Kooddoo to Male on Maldivian in the last row I was quite looking forward to getting on my Cathay Pacific redeye to Hong Kong, where I'd get a fully flat seat.

Putting Award Space on Hold – Rather than Having to Instantly Ticket – With Several Airlines
Reader Rick asked, I’d like to know how to hold award flights at the different major airlines and how long you can do so. Haven’t come across an authority post on this… Putting an award on hold is really useful. Award travel can be complicated: With the widespread advent of one-way awards, you may be booking multiple pieces of a trip in sequence, you want to make sure you can put the whole thing together before you’re committed. You may be transferring points from partners like American Express or Starwood and those transfers may not be instantaneous. So you want to secure the award and then transfer points when possible. You may be coordinating with award travel for hotels. Or with awards that other passengers are booking. Fundamentally booking award travel is more complicated than…
