Club Carlson Cyber Monday Points Sale Live

Earlier I wrote about how Club Carlson is offering a Cyber Monday 100% bonus on purchased points.

I figured I'd post a quick update that this deal is now live, through 11:59PM CST today, Monday, December 1, 2014.

The catch -- which wasn't initially clarified -- is that you're limited to receiving a 100% bonus on 10,000 points. That means that through this promotion you can receive a maximum of 20,000 points for $70, which is 0.35 cents per point.

Gogo Introduces Global Unlimited Plan

As I've said many times before, I'm a big fan of in-flight internet. I don't actually remember how transcons worked in the days before Gogo.

I have a Gogo Unlimited plan for $44.95 per month, which is well worth the money to me. I believe the cost is now $59.95 per month, though they've grandfathered in people with old pricing plans. While it's certainly not cheap, it's a bargain compared to what they're charging nowadays for individual flight passes, which can often be ~$25.

Anyway, I just received the following email from Gogo:

Time to Act: Here’s What to Tell Delta and United About Their New Frequent Flyer Programs

How Did You Do On Small Business Saturday?

Yesterday was Small Business Saturday (aka the day where American Express helps subsidize your annual fees), which is one of my favorite days of the year on the credit card front.

For the past several years American Express has run a promotion on this day whereby you can get a statement credit when you shop at a small business that day.

This year they offered three $10 statement credits per card. As far as I'm concerned, it's a great way to subsidize the annual fees on many American Express cards. ;)

So, I'm curious to hear what your strategy was for Small Business Saturday. The way I look at it, there are four kinds of American Express cardmembers when it comes to this promotion.

Club Carlson Cyber Monday 100% Bonus On Purchased Points

Club Carlson Tweeted on Friday that they'll be offering a 100% bonus on purchased Gold Points for Cyber Monday.

Earlier in the year Club Carlson offered a 75% bonus on purchased points a couple of times, which was already an incredible deal.

The ordinary cost to purchase Club Carlson Gold Points is 0.7 cents per point, so with a 100% bonus you'd presumably be paying just 0.35 cents per acquired point.

The catch is that you're limited to purchasing 40,000 points with Club Carlson per calendar year, so if you took advantage of the last offer you wouldn't be eligible for this one.

Flight Attendant Tells Passengers Not To Videotape

Passengers being removed from flights by law enforcement is pretty common, so it usually only makes the news when passengers are especially uncooperative.

Here's an interesting situation from a Delta Connection flight, not because of how the passengers were acting, but because the flight attendant got on the PA to tell passengers not to videotape it -- "ladies and gentlemen, this is not an opportunity to video anything. So if you can stop videotaping that would be extremely appreciated."

Interesting. On one hand, disobeying flight attendant orders violates FAA regulations, so if you kept filming you could be removed from the plane. Similarly, airlines do often have policies against filming onboard.

India Electronic Visas Now Available

As I've written about in the past, one of the biggest barriers to travel for me are visa requirements. I simply don't like filling out a dozen pages of information and parting ways with my passport for extended periods of time. No, it's not a hurdle that can't be overcome, and I've gotten many visas before for destinations I really want to visit. But I hate the process.

In February I wrote about how India was planning on loosening up visa requirements as well. Within five to six months they planned on introducing electronic travel authorizations and visas on arrival for nationals of many countries.

While the process of getting an India visa was a pain, at least it was valid for multiple entries over 10 years, which made the process slightly less frustrating.

Qantas Business Class Los Angeles To New York

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post entitled "Is This The Most Luxurious Domestic US Flight?"

I was referring to Qantas' flight between Los Angeles and New York, which they operate as a "tag" flight for their Sydney service. This flight has to be booked in conjunction with an international flight -- you can't fly exclusively between Los Angeles and New York on Qantas.

While Los Angeles to New York is probably the most impressive domestic market in terms of products to begin with, I was curious to see how Qantas stacked up.

How Not To Get Secondary Screening At Immigration

Two second summary: answer all the immigration officer's questions, even if he's being an ass.

On Wednesday my dad and I flew from Sydney to Los Angeles in Qantas first class. My dad has a German passport, while I have both a German and US passport (though of course I use my US passport with Global Entry when entering the US).

As we deplaned I explained to my dad that he'd have to go through separate lines, and that I'd wait for him at the baggage claim belt.

As we entered the immigration hall I saw that there was virtually no queue, so figured he'd be out in no time. Our checked bags arrived (yes, at this point in our trip we were checking bags), though there was still no sign of my dad.

Air France FlyingBlue February/March Promo Awards — Up To 50% Off

One of the best uses of Air France/KLM FlyingBlue miles is booking their Promo Awards. FlyingBlue publishes these every month, and they offer 25-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal. Back in the day Promo Awards would consistently be for 50% off and would have a good number of options in business class, though unfortunately they’ve devalued the program somewhat since then, and the discounts now vary.

However, there are still some great values to be had. FlyingBlue just published their latest Promo Awards. These are valid for bookings made between December 1 and December 31, 2014, and for travel between February 1, 2015 and March 31, 2015. While the January/February Promo Awards were quite impressive, this list is a bit more lackluster (which isn't really surprising, since March can be a busy month for travel).

For this Promo Award period, there are only three North America destinations that are eligible for discounted awards, as follows:

Free Points For Joining IHG Rewards Club

Back in the day it was pretty common for loyalty programs to offer a bonus just for signing up for an account. Unfortunately that's pretty rare nowadays, though.

IHG Rewards Club is offering 2,000 bonus points to new members with valid email addresses, and mailing addresses registered in the United States or Canada.

The promotion is valid through December 7, 2014, and bonus points will be deposited into the account upon the completion of the promotion.

How I’m Using Credit Card Rewards for Family Holiday Travel

Even though my husband’s family lives more than 12 hours away in Minnesota, we try and see them at least twice per year. Is Every Travel Day About to Become Like Thanksgiving Travel?

Via Tyler Cowen, the ‘Thanksgiving rush’ is something that many airports already experience at least one day a week, and some major airports regularly experience twice every week. According to the group’s analysis, a true “Thanksgiving rush” involves passenger volumes that run between 108 percent and 259 percent above an average day. ..Of the 30 […]

Alaska’s Awesome MVP Gold 75K Mileage Bonus

Yesterday Alex wrote about some changes that Alaska Airlines announced to their mileage earnings structure for the 2015 Mileage Plan program.

The changes were both positive and negative. Most significantly:

The negative change was that Alaska devalued their mileage earning structure for travel on Delta.

This is hardly surprising, given the revenue based 2015 SkyMiles program, as well as the ongoing battle between Alaska and Delta over the Seattle market. Alaska Mileage Plan is already a great program for crediting Delta flights, so it's hardly surprising that they're not leaving this huge arbitrage opportunity open.
