Central Market in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Central Market

The oldest continuously operating farmers market in the United States, fresh produce has been sold here in Pennsylvania Dutch country since the 1730s when it was legitimized by official decree from the King of England himself.

When the city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania was first founded as Hickory Town, town planner James Hamilton created a 120-foot square space to serve as a centrally located marketplace. King George II granted the market permanent status in 1742, and the market has kept operating in the same area since. Starting as an open-air venue and then using small sheds, Central Market is now housed in a Romanesque Revival building built in 1889.

Produce and meats from nearby farms have always been a staple of Central Market, and continue to be sold today alongside baked goods, flowers, candy, herbs, and specialties from the Amish community as well as Greek, Italian, German, Thai, African, and Middle Eastern cuisines. Once a small open-air marketplace in colonial Pennsylvania fields, Lancaster's Central Market continues to bring local foods to modern city residents even without the king's approval.

Chase Ink Plus 70,000 Point Sign-Up Bonus!

For a limited time, Chase is offering an increased sign-up bonus of 70,000 Ultimate Rewards points on the Ink Plus Business Credit Card after spending $5,000 within three months. This is an incredible offer, as the highest sign-up bonus Chase has offered to the general public has been 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points.

The offer was made available earlier this summer, but you could only get it by going in to a Chase branch, so this is much more convenient for many of us.

The catch with this bonus is that the $95 annual fee isn’t waived, which it otherwise has been for the first year. With an extra 20,000 Ultimate Rewards points, I would say that it is definitely worth paying the $95 annual fee.

Korean Air SkyPass Ultimate Rewards Transfers Are Back

As I've mentioned many times before, Korean Air SkyPass is one of my favorite frequent flyer programs. They're transfer partners with Chase Ultimate Rewards, which is an easy points currency to rack up. The main reason I love them so much is because Korean Air probably releases more transpacific first class saver award space than any other airline.

Booking Using HotelUpgrade App

HotelUpgrade is a brand new app with the tagline "VIP service comes standard." It has launched within the past week, and is available for free in the app store.

I met someone from HotelUpgrade a couple of months ago, and they explained their new app, which would give you extra benefits and perks for stays at select hotels. My follow up question was "okay, what kind of a rate do I have to book to qualify?" The response was "any rate you could book directly through the hotel's website." Something didn't add up to me. I can earn extra perks on AAA, senior, government, and corporate rates? That sounds too good to be true, so I told them to let me know when they launch.

Well, they were at FTU Advanced in Chicago this weekend (they were one of the sponsors) and let me know that the app finally launched.

Keeping it Simple in the Cyclades: Ios

As a new generation of Greeks reclaim their heritage, they’re looking past overtouristed islands like Mykonos to quiet stunners such as Ios. La Compagnie’s Business Class Fares Still Great

One of the most interesting airline startups of the year has been La Compagnie, the all business class airline operating 757s exclusively between Newark and Paris. They had some operational issues when they started, and I was really excited to fly them between Paris and Newark. At 550EUR one-way, the ticket was dirt cheap for a transatlantic business class flight.

I walked away from the flight thinking both what an amazing value and sub-par business class product it was. After the flight I had the chance to speak with La Compagnie's Deputy CEO, who had some interesting insights into their operation.

I was mainly critical about the operation because:

Post-Trip Depression: It’s Often Emotionally Harder to Come Home than Go Away

Before my first trip around the world, I was driving through Boston with my friend Mike. One of the things I was talking about was how different life would be when I returned home. On Friday I mentioned that the IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks preview list was released, whereby select hotels are available for just 5,000 points per night. Today the official list of just over 175 properties has gone “live”.

While the main PointBreaks page hasn’t yet been updated, if you go to the individual participating hotel links (below), you should see the hotels already bookable at just 5,000 points per night.

The new IHG Rewards Club’s PointBreaks list is valid for stays through November 30, 2014.

Keep in mind as well that IHG Rewards Club recently updated the terms of the PointBreaks bookings, and you can only book two stays per hotel per promotion:
