Fly Geyser in Gerlach, Nevada

Fly Geyser

This alien looking geyser on the edge of Black Rock Desert is actually man made. Man made by accident, that is.

There are actually two geysers on the property. The first was created nearly 100 years ago as part of an effort to make a part of the desert usable for farming. A well was drilled and geothermal boiling water (200 degrees) was hit. Obviously not suitable for irrigation water, this geyser was left alone and a 10 to 12 foot calcium carbonate cone formed.

In 1964 a geothermic energy company drilled a test well at the same site. The water they struck was that same 200 degrees. Hot, but not hot enough for their purposes. The well was supposedly re-sealed, but apparently it did not hold. The new geyser, a few hundred feet north of the original, robbed the first of its water pressure and the cone now lays dry.

This second geyser, known as Fly Geyser, has grown substantially in the last 40 years as minerals from the geothermal water pocket deposit on the desert surface. Because there are multiple geyser spouts, this geyser has not created a cone as large as the first, but an ever growing alien looking mound. The geyser is covered with thermophilic algae, which flourishes in moist, hot environments, resulting in the multiple hues of green and red that add to its out-of-this-world appearance.

The geyser is on Fly Ranch, is private property and trespassing is illegal. However, if you drive to the neighboring town of Gerlach and go to Bruno's restaurant they can put you in contact with the owners who do day tours of the spring for seasonal pricing.

One Of The Airline Industry’s Greatest Mysteries

I just wrapped up a sub-48 hour trip to Germany, during which I got very little sleep. While dragging myself out of bed and to the airport this morning at an ungodly hour I walked through my hotel's lobby and for a second thought I was in the airport's lost luggage department. There were about two dozen massive suitcases, and then two dozen rollaboard suitcases, all neatly lined up.

I looked up and saw a crew from a major Asian airline. An airline where crews just have a 1-2 night layover and then turn right around. And it got me wondering, what the hell does each crew member do with two suitcases for such a short trip?!

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the system that non-US airlines have. At US airlines, flight attendants carry on all their bags, and many times they have a handful of bags each which look more like an RV than a carry-on. And that's frustrating, since in many cases they're competing with passengers for limited overhead bin space.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Awards Become More Restrictive

Via Head for Points, Virgin Atlantic has quietly updated their change and cancellation policy. Going forward, if you've redeemed Flying Club miles for an award, you won't receive a refund of your miles if you cancel within 7 days of the flight.

The Virgin Atlantic website now reflects the following terms [emphasis mine]:

"Once tickets for a Reward Booking are issued, no name changes are allowed. If for any reason a flight Reward is cancelled by the Member outside 7 days of departure, 100% of the Miles will be re-credited to the Member’s account. A cancellation fee of £30 for changes to flights originating in the UK, US$50 for changes to flights originating in the US or local currency equivalent of US$50 for changes to flights originating in any other region will apply

If for any reason a flight Reward is cancelled by a member within 7 days prior to departure, no Miles will be refunded and a £30 administration fee will be charged to process the refund of any taxes, charges/surcharges. If you change the original travel date (within 7 days of departure) and later decide to cancel your flights, you will forfeit the mileage used for the Reward. Once travel has commenced Miles cannot be refunded."

Alaska And Virgin Australia Awards Bookable On Delta.com Again

Delta made a pretty major change to the SkyMiles program last week, whereby they no longer priced stopovers on award tickets. This didn't just apply on delta.com, but also for reservations made by phone.

Delta quickly clarified that this was as a result of changes to the IT of Delta SkyMiles, clearly in preparation for the 2015 SkyMiles program. While Delta will be introducing one-way awards in 2015, I think it's safe to assume they'll come at the expense of stopovers on roundtrip awards.

Delta claimed that award stopovers could still be priced by calling Delta reservations agents, though that wasn't entirely true. Unless you specifically ask an agent for a stopover, they know about the "glitch," and they manually price it, they'll charge you extra for stopovers. It's fascinating when an airline's policy is that they'll charge you the wrong price unless you know to call them out on it... but that's an entirely different story.

Anyway, there were two other seemingly innocent changes -- delta.com stopped displaying award availability for travel on Alaska Airlines and Virgin Australia. I gave them the benefit of the doubt on that one, though it was a bit odd that delta.com stopped displaying space for both partners around the same time. I spoke to someone at Delta who explained it was an IT glitch. An actual IT glitch, unlike the change with stopovers.

Emirates Adds Third Daily A380 Flight To New York JFK

Wow! Emirates is going "all in" on New York, as they're adding a third daily A380 flight between Dubai and New York JFK as of March 8, 2015. This is in addition to their daily 777-300ER flight, which operates via Milan.

The new frequency will operate with the following schedule:

EK207 Dubai to New York departing 2:50PM arriving 8:35PM

EK208 New York to Dubai departing 4:30PM arriving 1:15PM (+1 day)

On first glance that doesn't make sense, given the "negative" ground time in New York, though they're accomplishing this by tightening up their overall schedule in New York.

Winter Trips With a Side of Culture

Everyone’s heard tales of parents who blend pureed veggies into their kids’ cookies. Save $3000+ On Domestic Travel

Every so often Chase offers a 50,000 point sign-up bonus after spending $2,000 within three months on their co-branded Southwest Airlines® Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card, provided you haven't received a sign-up bonus on this card in the past 24 months. The same offer is also available for the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Card. Each card has a $99 annual fee, which isn't waived the first year.

This is a pretty good offer, given that 50,000 points will get you ~$714 worth of airfare. And that's not bad just for applying for a credit card and meeting the minimum spend, even if Southwest isn't your primary airline.

The real potential for value here, however, comes from the potential for earning the Southwest Companion Pass, which can save you thousands of dollars.

Why Are You Asking Me So Many Questions?

No, this post isn't about the nearly 200,000 comments that have been left on the blog. ;)

This morning I flew from Frankfurt to New York on Singapore Airlines in Suites Class. It's tough to beat flying Singapore Airlines on a transatlantic flight, though the one downside is the lounge situation in Frankfurt.

Of course Lufthansa has the stunning First Class Terminal and several lovely First Class Lounges, but the issue is that only first class passengers traveling on Lufthansa flights have access.

If you're traveling in first class on a Star Alliance airline you only get access to their Senator Lounge, which is more like a business class lounge.
