How Many Domestic First Class Seats Are Actually Sold, Versus Left Over for Upgrades?

A decade ago conventional wisdom was that 10% of domestic first class seats were occupied by passengers on paid first class tickets. Airlines used to charge sky high rates for first, didn’t really discount (other than through certain corporate agreements), and as a result they’d sell a few seats but most would be empty — […]

Maximizing Points: Credit Cards with Annual Point Bonuses

Between meeting credit card spending requirements and bonus point incentives, it’s nice to have a few credit cards on hand that offer you an annual renewal bonus, free and clear. No additional spending required, just an annual reward for keeping your card open. The nice part about this is that the rewards often exceed the […]

Amex EveryDay Vs. Chase Freedom — Which Is Better?

Reader Django asked the following question on my post about the 2015 Chase Freedom 5% bonus categories:

"Lucky – do you have a recommendation between this card and the Amex Everyday cards you blogged about a few weeks ago? I presume part of the answer has to do with the value of Membership Rewards points and, as I’ve never had them, I’m not really sure how they stack up vis-a-vis Chase points. Your thoughts would be really helpful here."

As far as I'm concerned, the Chase Freedom and Amex EveryDay are the two all around most lucrative no annual fee credit cards. But they're also very different in terms of their value propositions.

50% Off Virgin America First Class Tickets

As I've written about a countless number of times before, airfare has been way up the past couple of years as a result of consolidation and an improved global economy. One interesting result of this is that we've seen the gap between economy and first class fares narrow quite a bit. In many cases first and business class fares have actually decreased, to the point that they're almost similarly priced to economy.

Anyway, Virgin America is an airline that seems to run quite a few promotions offering discounts on First Class and Main Cabin Select, and they're back with another one of those promotions for the holidays.

Virgin America is offering 50% off First Class and Main Cabin Select fares booked by 11:59PM PT on Sunday, December 14, 2014, and for travel between December 19, 2014, and January 2, 2015. Simple use promo code MERRY50 at the time of booking.

Is This The Hardest Job In The Airline Industry?

Unarguably the biggest tragedy in our industry this year has been with Malaysia Airlines. They were already in trouble financially at the beginning of the year, and having two 777s go down in a matter of months made the situation even worse. It goes without saying it's a heartbreaking tragedy for the loss of life, but also for all the people that work to make Malaysia Airlines as successful as it can be.

Can Malaysia Airlines be saved? I don't know enough about their situation to say one way or another. But I sure don't envy the person in charge of doing that.

One story I meant to cover last week was about Christoph Mueller being tapped as the next CEO of Malaysia Airlines. His contract at Aer Lingus runs out May 1, 2015, at which point he should be transitioning to Malaysia Airlines.

Why Delta’s Comfort+ Isn’t Totally Bad News For Gold Medallions

There's nothing I love more on this blog than the Delta apologists. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- I think Delta is the best run legacy carrier in the US, and that's because they have a fantastic route network and incredible operational reliability. Those are the most important things an airline can do for business travelers. End of story.

Earlier in the week I wrote about Delta rebranding their cabins, which I think can most accurately be compared to a fresh coat of paint... at best. I didn't consider the announcement to be especially significant one way or another. I just found it hilarious that they were rebranding all cabins and pretending things changed.

For example, Delta rebranded BusinessElite as Delta One. In their own words (per their FAQs on "the new Delta experience"), what's changing?

Here’s Emirates’ A380 Sales Pitch To Other Airlines

Yesterday I wrote a post about Airbus possibly discontinuing the production of the A380.

The plane just hasn't gotten much traction lately, and Airbus hasn't received a single new order for the plane this year. Next year they'll have to make a decision about the future of the plane -- in 2018 (once the current orders are fulfilled), should they scrap the project, or should they invest a few billion dollars into further improving the concept, in hopes of selling more of them to the airlines?

One thing that's fascinating is just how much of a fan Emirates is of the A380. It's normal for airlines to prefer one aircraft over another, though Emirates' CEO Tim Clark loves the plane so much that he has basically been going on roadshows with Airbus trying to sell it to other airlines.

Of course he's not doing this out of the kindness of his heart, but rather because Emirates benefits from this plane more than any other airline, and has incredible purchasing power with Airbus. He's miffed at the thought of the aircraft being discontinued, because it's a core part of the Emirates business model.
