How To Redeem Miles For Emirates First Class

Reader Cynthia left the following question on the blog recently:

"Hi, I was hoping to do a splurge Emirates first class flight from NY to Dubai with my mum on November, just like what you did you your dad, but when searching on the Alaska website, I didn’t find any award availability for business/first after March. I was reading online that is likely because the Alaska – Emirates partnership for Emirates business/first looks to be ending. Do you have any insight on this? Are there any other options for award travel on Emirates first apart from using Emirates points?"

I've written extensively about how Alaska Mileage Plan doesn't have access to all first class and some business class award availability on Emirates for travel after March 28, 2015. Here are the posts on that topic:

Brand-New: Discover Miles Card Provides a 3% Rebate on Everything

Link: Discover Miles Card (New Offer for 3% Cash Back) In the world of travel hacking, you almost never hear anything about Discover—which is totally understandable. When I was a kid, my parents liked to use their Discover card, which usually created the following interaction almost everywhere we went:
Server presents the bill, and my parents present their card. Server goes away and returns a few minutes later. Server: “Sorry, we don’t take Discover. Do you have a Visa or MasterCard?"Parents: “Oh, okay. Here’s another card.”

In my adult world of miles and points, I've opened at least fifty credit cards in the best five years (this is not an overstatement—the actual number is probably higher), but these have all been through Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. The grand total of Discover cards that I've had in my life is precisely zero. All of a sudden, that may change—and it may change this week.

How To Make Hyatt Diamond Guest Of Honor Reservations

The most exciting new benefit is called Guest Of Honor, whereby when a Diamond member makes a points booking for someone else, they'll receive the full Diamond benefits. This is exclusively available on free night redemptions, and not on revenue stays or Points + Cash stays.

When You’re Frustrated By Your Airline’s Flight Delays, Don’t Do This.

Sit-ins, refusing to leave the aircraft, are becoming a thing in Iran to protest poor operational performance of Iranian airlines. Club Carlson Offering Targeted Triple Points Promotion

I usually don't write about targeted promotions, but I think the context on this one is sufficiently interesting to warrant a post.

Back in the day Hyatt offered a "Faster Free Nights" promotion year after year, which is arguably the most lucrative promotion the hotel industry has ever seen. For every two stays you'd make you'd earn one free night at any Hyatt in the world. Two nights at your local $80 per night Hyatt would earn you a free night at the $1,000+ per night Park Hyatt Sydney.

And that was only the beginning, since at the time there were tons of stackable bonuses. Hyatt was literally paying you to stay at their hotels.

Costco Replaces American Express With Citi For Exclusive Agreement

A few weeks ago it was announced that American Express and Costco will be terminating their relationship as of March 31, 2016:

“We are proud of the value created over many years for Costco, for our Card Members and for our shareholders,” said Kenneth I. Chenault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Express. “Taking a very disciplined approach, we began discussions on a possible renewal with Costco well in advance of the contract expiration. However, we were unable to reach terms that would have made economic sense for our Company and shareholders. Instead, we will focus on opportunities in other parts of our business where we see significant potential for growth and attractive returns over the moderate to long term.”

Review: Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen

After a couple of nights at the perfectly functional Radisson Blu Scandinavia Copenhagen, it was time to head over to the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen, which is generally more highly rated.

For our two night stay the rate was either 1595DKK (~$240) or 50,000 Gold Points per night.

Since I have the Club Carlson Premier Rewards Visa Signature® Card, the second night of every award redemption is free. That means my two night would only cost me 50,000 points. That's a heck of a deal, given that it would have otherwise cost me almost $500 for the two night stay.

The Radisson Blu Royal really is in the heart of the city, as it's right across from the central train station and Tivoli Gardens, which is the second oldest amusement park in the world.

However, I've received several comments and emails from readers over the weekend noting that Cathay Pacific's Asia Miles program no longer shows online as an American Express Membership Rewards transfer partner:

Cathay Pacific is actually one of American Express' newer transfer partners, as they were added back in mid-2012.

Hilton Offering Free Wifi Globally Starting In August 2015

The past year or so we've really seen the major hotel chains "evolve" when it comes to their complimentary wifi offerings.

IHG Rewards Club was the first to offer all members of their loyalty program free wifi. Then Marriott, Starwood, and Hyatt followed.

With IHG Rewards Club, Marriott, and Starwood there have been "catches" to the free wifi, like needing to be a member of their loyalty program and/or needing to book your reservation directly with the hotel in order to be eligible (not that those are big hurdles). Hyatt introduced "no strings attached" free wifi, meaning you don't have to be a member of their loyalty program and don't have to book directly through them in order to offer free wifi.
