Flying over the Ice Island

Strange Sony Cam Failure I had the strangest problem with my Sony A7r soon after I took this shot. I had on the 70-200mm and was holding it the window. Cold dot com. But I don’t think that was the problem. Anyway, there was this little flap-thing that fell down in front of the sensor, […]

Could It Be — Good News From Delta?

It has been an interesting last few months for Delta. Despite the introduction of one-way awards for half the price of round trips on January 1, 2015, it seems like every other Delta move has had a negative impact. At one point last month, I even questioned the sanity of Delta’s upper management. As a […]

Delta’s Next Transformative Step is Here, Introduces Revenue-Based Upgrades

Since the elimination of award charts from Delta’s website, I’ve been saying that: We won’t know when the airline devalues, since we don’t have an official benchmark to compare pricing to It’s a step towards a revenue-based program, where awards are priced dynamically based on the cost of a ticket at any given time. 70,000 Points Plus Four Other Reasons This Is The Best Hotel Credit Card

I've written in the past about the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card, which I'd argue is the single most compelling hotel credit card to keep long term. Readership on the blog is constantly growing, and I know a lot of people might not be familiar with what makes this card so awesome, so I figured I'd share.

First of all, the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card comes with a 70,000 point sign-up bonus after spending $1,000 within three months of account opening, provided you haven't received the bonus in the past 24 months. The annual fee on the card is $49, though it's waived the first year.

With that in mind, here are five things that make this card especially awesome:

Delta 2015 SkyMiles Updates — Good News, For Once!

Okay, when a frequent flyer program announces "updates" in this day and age it's almost uniformly negative. And that's especially true for Delta SkyMiles, which is quite possibly the biggest "innovator" when it comes to airline loyalty program.

Anyway, Delta announced some updates to the 2015 SkyMiles program. The updates are minor, and in many cases they're not even "updates" since they're just rehashing what has already been done. That being said, they are worth covering, in my opinion.

Here they are, in no particular order:

Cathay Pacific Refreshing Their Business Class Seat On The A350

Cathay Pacific offers a reverse herringbone seat in their longhaul business class cabin, which is my favorite business class product out there. Even though they've had it for years now, it's still a cutting edge product, in my opinion.

The great thing about reverse herringbone seats is that they're in a 1-2-1 configuration, so each seat has direct aisle access and a lot of privacy. In a way, it's very similar to the "last generation" first class suites offered by many airlines.

Cathay Pacific will be among the first airlines to take delivery of the Airbus A350, as they have a total of 46 on order, including 20 A350-900s and 26 A350-1000s (what happened to the days where they started numbering aircraft series with -100?!).

Park Hyatt Dubai Vs. Grand Hyatt Dubai — Which Is Better?

I get asked a lot about hotels in the UAE, in particular in Dubai. Out of habit I've often stayed at the Park Hyatt Dubai, which I like for a few reasons:

-- It's really close to the airport, so is great for a quick overnight

-- It's a bit removed from the city, so really feels more like a secluded resort than a city hotel

-- As is the case with most Park Hyatts, service is a bit more personalized and intimate than at a mega hotel

I recently stayed at the Grand Hyatt Dubai for the first time, and figured I'd write a brief comparison between the two properties, prior to writing my full review. The funny thing is that I get reader feedback all the time from people that both love and hate both properties, so I figured it would help to kind of set expectations properly.

Review: American Airlines First Class A321 New York To Los Angeles

American has been flying their new Airbus A321s between New York and Los Angeles since last January, and suffice to say it's a really nice product. American previously operated 767-200s on the route. While widebodies are nice, the planes were old and the hard product was outdated.

It's interesting that American went for a premium configuration, which includes 10 first class seats, all of which have direct aisle access. This came at the same time that United was eliminating first class from their transcon routes, making American the only carrier to offer three cabin service between New York and Los Angeles.

I reviewed American's A321 first class shortly after it commenced service on the route last year, so was curious to see how the product was holding up.
