Alan Turing Memorial in Manchester, England

Alan Turing Memorial

The famed Alan Turing was a man of many geniuses. From mathematics to cryptography to computer science, Turing was a visionary thinker in each field leaving a legacy that has had a part in most of our modern inventions, and thanks to a bronze monument in Manchester you can sit and have lunch with him.

Eternally sitting on a public park bench in Manchester's Sackville Park the bronze statue of the innovative computer pioneer seems to just be waiting for some companions to come sit next to him. Unveiled in 2001, the figure sits on a bench, which is itself made of bronze, holding an apple which is likely meant to signify the biblical fruit of knowledge. Etched on the bench behind him is a rough cipher meant to look like the output of the infamous Enigma Machine which Turing helped crack. When decoded, the phrase reads, "Founder of Computer Science." This appellation is made a bit more clear on the plaque at the figure's feet which lists the scientist's birth and death dates as well as a short list of his accomplishments.

Turing committed suicide after being legally outed for being homosexual making him an important figure in the LGBT community. The statue's placement seems to reflect this as it is located near to Manchester's gay culture center.

Whether he is appreciated as a hero of science or the culture wars or both, the round-faced icon makes a great sitting companion and will continue to be well into the future he helped create.

Air France New Business Class To Los Angeles As Of June 1, 2015

Air France is presently refreshing their cabins as part of their "Best and Beyond" project, whereby they're investing 500 million Euros in new cabins. As part of this, Air France is going from offering angled flat seats in business class, to reverse herringbone seats, which are fully flat and feature direct aisle access. These are my favorite kind of business class seats.

Air France's entire longhaul fleet should be reconfigured by the summer of 2017. Air France is starting with reconfiguring their 777s, followed by their A330s and A380s.

I had the opportunity to attend the Air France Expo in New York in June, which was the same week they launched the new business class product on the flight between Paris and New York.

Using United GPUs To Upgrade Lufthansa Flights — Change In Procedure

While several airlines issue upgrade instruments, they can typically only be applied for travel on that airline. United Global Premier Upgrades (GPUs) are unique in that they can be applied for travel on Lufthansa as well, which is United's transatlantic joint venture partner. As a reminder, GPUs are the upgrade vouchers that Premier 1K members receive six of each year just for qualifying for status.

Up until now the process of using United upgrades on Lufthansa has been cumbersome. You needed to request a paper voucher, and it would only clear on a space available basis day of departure -- there was no way to confirm the upgrade in advance.

Via UA Insider on FlyerTalk, United has now changed the process for how GPUs can be applied for travel on United:

Review: Singapore Airlines Suites Class A380 Frankfurt To New York

Since boarding started so early I was among the last aboard. At the boarding door I was welcomed by the leading steward and leading stewardess, who directed me to my seat, 3A.

This flight was operated by an A380 with the "older" Suites Class cabin. I'm not really sure I get why Singapore is in the process of "refreshing" their A380 Suites Class cabins, since I can't say I liked the fresher cabin on the way out any more than this one.

The window seats in row three are my favorite in Suites Class. That's because they have an extra set of windows -- instead of two windows, you get three.

While it does feel a bit like a dentist's chair, you can't beat the privacy and size of the Singapore A380 Suites Class "compartment," in my opinion.

Great Deal: $100 Off Two Night Orbitz Hotel Reservation

On Cyber Monday I wrote about the amazing deal Orbitz was offering, whereby you could receive $100 off a hotel stay when using Visa Checkout. The promotion was gone within hours.

Well, the promotion appears to be live again, with the caveat that it's only valid on hotel stays of two nights or more.

As I explained last time, the promotion is valid when you book a qualifying, two night stay at a standalone hotel for a stay between now and June 30, 2015. You must use Visa Checkout as the method of payment, and use promotion code VISACHECKOUT. Using Visa Checkout is pretty easy, so that requirement shouldn’t be a limiting factor for anyone.
