What are the Largest Airlines – in the US and in the World?

The winner of the crown among the World’s Largest Airlines – such as it is, since it’s hardly as meaningful a metric as ‘best airline’ or ‘most profitable airline’ — is American Airlines, now that they’ve merged with US Airways. When Delta merged with Northwest it became the largest airline in the United States. Then […]

Signs You Spend Too Much Time On Planes?

In June I compiled a list of 10 signs you spend too much time in hotels, and asked you guys to pile on with your thoughts. I was working on a similar list for 10 signs that you spend too much time on planes, though I think last night I had an experience which just sums it all up in one.

I flew Frankfurt to New York in the morning on Singapore, which is as far as I know the earliest transatlantic flight out of Frankfurt (it leaves at 8:30AM). I both love and hate that, since it means you get to New York early enough to avoid rush hour, but also have a long day ahead of you for staying awake.

After a long day I changed into my (British Airways first class) jammies and hopped in bed. I then spent 30 seconds looking for the seatbelt, because I was tired and didn't want to be woken up in the middle of the night if there was turbulence.

16 quotes from young travelers

I Was Asked To Power On Electronics At Security

In early July I posted about the new TSA policy which was implemented at overseas airports, whereby powerless electronic devices wouldn't be permitted on planes.

Yesterday I experienced that -- along with "targeted" secondary security -- for the first time. It was no big deal at all, but I figured I'd share my experience, since it was a first.

I was flying from Frankfurt to New York on Singapore Airlines, and when I went to board the plane the machine that scans boarding passes beeped several times. The agent told me I needed to go to the ticket desk for a document check, though once there I was directed to the side of the gate, where two police offers told me to sit down.

Airline Imitates the Onion, Chase Eliminates a Bonus, American Allows 18 Hour Domestic Connections, and Another Airline With Pre-Order Meals

News and notes from around the interweb: I’m not a teenage girl so I’ve never brought along my own pillow when I’ve traveled. But travel pillows are definitely a thing. Are they your thing? Best Singapore Airlines A380 Business Class Seat?

Yesterday I flew Singapore Airlines A380 business class from Frankfurt to New York. While I've flown Singapore's A380 in Suites Class and have flown Singapore's 777-300ER business class (which is in theory an identical product), I was excited to finally ride on the upper deck of Singapore's A380.

Before my flight I really struggled with which seat to choose, given that everyone I asked seemed to have a different favorite. So I figured I'd chime in and share my thoughts.

First of all, Singapore has two versions of the A380:

- One version of the A380 has 60 business class seats

- The other A380 version has 86 business class seats

I was on the version with 86 seats, which meant the entire upper deck consisted exclusively of business class.

Out of the Ashes: Valparaíso

Though just 70 miles south of Chile's capital, Santiago, Valparaíso is a destination in its own right. The port city's economy may not be what it was, but the vibrant culture you'll find there remains, despite a flagging maritime trade and earthquakes that have shaken it to its core. As the city and its people rebuild and heal after a catastrophic fire claimed homes and lives, there has never been a better time to visit. Here's why.

InterContinental Royal Ambassador Qualification Requirements

InterContinental Royal Ambassador used to be one of my favorite top tier status levels. It was invitation only, and what I thought they did so well was offer a lot of guaranteed benefits. As a Royal Ambassador member you'd receive guaranteed 8AM check-in and 4PM check-out, guaranteed upgrades, complimentary beverages from the minibar, etc.

My biggest frustration was that they didn't publish qualification requirements for Royal Ambassador status, and I wasn't prepared to spend 50-60 nights in a hotel chain, only to potentially not requalify. Fortunately back in the day there wasn't really a need to qualify the "hard way," given that they offered Royal Ambassador referral certificates. Royal Ambassador members could nominate someone else to Royal Ambassador status, and going back several years even referred Royal Ambassador members received referral certificates, so there was an almost never ending chain of Royal Ambassadors. Those certificates have been eliminated in the meantime.

Good Time To Take Advantage Of Marriott 70K Increased Sign-Up Bonus

I've written in the past about the increased sign-up bonus on Marriott's co-branded Chase Visa Card.

For a limited time Chase is offering 70,000 Marriott Rewards points after spending $2,000 in the first three months, plus one free night stay at a Category 1-4 property after account approval. A free night at a Category 4 property goes for 20,000 points, so the sign-up bonus can be worth up to 90,000 points.

The $85 annual fee is even waived the first year.

Anyway, I have reason to believe that this offer will be changing very soon, so if you'd like to take advantage of it, I'd highly recommend applying today.

American AAdvantage Stopover Exceptions Added

Up until recently, American's policy for AAdvantage award tickets within the US & Canada has been that you can't have connections of over four hours. The one exception has been when the next flight isn't within four hours, in which case you can take the next flight that operates in the market (and to be clear, we're talking about the actual next flight, and not the next flight with award space).

It looks like American has loosened up on the rules for connections to smaller markets with less service as of July.

British Airways Adds Paid 72 Hour Ticket Hold Option

Yesterday British Airways introduced a new option to hold a revenue ticket for up to 72 hours for a fee. Through this program, you can lock in the price of a ticket for up to 72 hours. If the price goes up you get the "locked in" rate, while if the price goes down you can of course book it instead.
