Flags and other funny ways around the 24-hour rule

La REcylcerie in Paris, France

La REcylcerie

Located in a disused train station straddling the abandoned Petite Ceinture, La REcylcerie prides itself on an eco-friendly ethos of upcycling and reuse which is a stark contrast to the other posh eateries in the area.

La REcylcerie has devoted itself to those three famous R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The site offers locally produced food and products that encourage customers to take part in environmentally sound practices in their own life. In addition to its culinary roots, the center, which boasts eight separate spaces in the fully repurposed train station they call home, also offers classes that teach DIY and creative skills ranging from theater to gardening to cooking. The site also plays host to such community building events as seed swaps, readings, and concerts.

While most visitors and tourists to Paris are crowding bistros and bourgeois restaurants, La REcylcerie gives people an alternative that shows a side of Paris that most people don't associate with the city. The center is also planning on instituting an urban garden complete with goats and chickens, adding an even more vibrant sense of local sustainability to an already Earth-friendly bastion.

Chase Freedom Eliminating 10% Bonus For Checking Customers

Last month Chase announced changes to the benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which were both positive and negative.

As far as I'm concerned, the biggest negative change was the elimination of the 7% annual points dividend as of 2016. The good news is that they introduced primary auto collision damage waiver coverage and also increased trip cancellation/insurance coverage. The card is still my all around favorite credit car. Whether or not the changes were a net positive or negative depends on which benefits you value most.

Now Chase has also announced some changes to the benefits of the Chase Freedom®. This is one of Chase's best no annual fee credit cards, which offers 5% cash back in rotating quarterly categories. Best of all, the points it earns can be converted into "premium" Ultimate Rewards points if you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Ink Plus® Business Credit Card, or Ink Bold® Business Charge Card).

More Cathay Pacific First Class To Chicago

Last October, Cathay Pacific announced that they'd be launching an additional 3x weekly flights to Chicago as of August 2, 2014. That's some impressive growth, given that Cathay Pacific only began service to Chicago as of September 1, 2011.

While their daily frequency is operated by a four class Boeing 777-300ER (featuring first, business, premium economy, and economy), the flight operating the additional 3x weekly frequencies is presently operated by a three class 777-300ER (featuring business, premium economy, and economy).

Singapore Airlines Inflight Wifi

I just flew Singapore Airlines business class from Frankfurt to New York JFK, and had an absolutely amazing flight. It was my first longhaul flight in Singapore Airlines business class in about five years, and I felt like I was in first class. I’ll cover that in more detail in a separate post, though.

This flight was also unique for me since it was my first Singapore Airlines flight with inflight wifi. Their inflight wifi provider is OnAir, and Singapore is apparently progressively installing wifi throughout their Airbus A380 and Boeing 777-300ER fleet.

At Home in Rome: Where to Stay

The Roman Empire may have fallen off the map centuries ago, but to a modern traveler, the center of Italy’s capital city may feel just as vast. Are Targeted Loyalty Program Promotions Unfair?

Yesterday I posted about the targeted promotion I received from Hyatt Gold Passport, offering 50,000 bonus Gold Passport points after 20 stays.

Typically when there are targeted promotions there are several versions of it, and it can take a while for every eligible member to be contacted. After all, with millions of members all emails will rarely go out at exactly the same time. I recommended that people wait before being disappointed that they weren’t targeted.

That didn’t happen. A lot of people were pissed, and even said they would be switching stays to Starwood or another chain, despite the fact that other hotel chains haven’t even announced their fall promotion yet.

Downgraded On Award Ticket?

Reader Young asked the following question on the "Ask Lucky" page of the blog:

"Hi, Ben,

My family recently completed a trip between US and Europe. We reserved four business class seats using US Airways’ mileage. On the way back from FRA to ORD, United Airline downgraded three of our seats from Business class to Economy class because the scheduled flight was cancelled due to weather condition. Only my seat was preserved in Business class probably due to my 1K status. I sent a message to UA customer relationship for some compensation, but was told that I need contact US Airways as the tickets were issued by US Airways. Please advise what I should expect for a reasonable compensation, and which airline is responsible for it.

Appreciate your help!"

How To Handle US Airways Award Ticket Schedule Change?

A few months ago I shared some tips for maximizing airline schedule changes, in particular as they pertain to award tickets.

It goes without saying that in just about every industry, your experience will vary depending on the representative you speak with, though there are definitely some general rules to understand so that you don't waste time.

I get emails all the time asking about how to deal with schedule changes, so I figured I'd write a post explaining how I'd deal with one in practice. I think ultimately it's easier to learn with a concrete example, as opposed to just explaining the "theory" behind it.
