Report From the Frontlines: United’s New Meal Service, and Why Other Airlines Will Put Money Into Improving Your Experience Too.

LifeMiles 100% Mileage Transfer Bonus Through February 16, 2015

Avianca’s LifeMiles program has just announced that they’ll be offering a 100% bonus on transferred miles between February 2 and February 16, 2015.

The rules of the promotion are kind of confusing because LifeMiles doesn't actually publish them, but:

-- The terms state you can transfer at most 75,000 miles during the promotion (not including the 100% bonus), but I can't seem to actually get the system to accept that; I've had no issue getting to the purchase page with a 50,000 mile transfer, though

-- The cost to transfer miles is 1.5 cents per mile, which is cheaper than buying LifeMiles

30% Bonus On Purchase Of Hyatt Points Through February 15, 2015

Through February 15, 2015, Hyatt Gold Passport is offering a 30% bonus on the first purchase of points during the promotion period.

If you max out the promotion and purchase 55,000 points you’d receive a total of 71,500 Gold Passport points. That would cost you $1,320, which is a rate of ~1.85 cents per Gold Passport point.

How does this stack up to Hyatt’s past promotions on the purchase of points?

Ethiopian Airlines 787 New Fully Flat Business Class

Over the summer I flew Ethiopian Airlines business class from Beijing to Addis Ababa on a 787, and then from Addis Ababa to Frankfurt on a 767.

While the 787 itself was sparkly, I was dumbfounded by the fact that Ethiopian chose to install angled business class seats on a brand new plane. Don't get me wrong, I'm not picking on Ethiopian specifically here, as there are lots of airlines that do the same. Just look at Air France and Lufthansa with their A380s, for example.

While the flight was otherwise decent enough, the fact that the seats were angled just made it a not-so-pleasant flight.

Another Fun Fifth Freedom Flight From The US to Canada

I love a good fifth freedom flight. For those of you not familiar with fifth freedom routes, it's when an airline from a third country operates a flight between two other countries.

For example, unarguably the most glamorous fifth freedom flight within North America is Cathay Pacific's flight between New York JFK and Vancouver. The flight continues to Hong Kong, though you can also book the flight exclusively between New York and Vancouver.

The flight offers full longhaul international service, from bedding to Krug.

Air France FlyingBlue April/May Promo Awards — Up To 50% Off

One of the best uses of Air France/KLM FlyingBlue miles is booking their Promo Awards. FlyingBlue publishes these every month, and they offer 25-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal. Back in the day Promo Awards would consistently be for 50% off and would have a good number of options in business class, though unfortunately they’ve devalued the program somewhat since then, and the discounts now vary.

However, there are still some great values to be had. FlyingBlue just published their latest Promo Awards. These are valid for bookings made between February 1 and February 28, 2015, and for travel between April 1 and May 31, 2015. Unfortunately this set of Promo Awards sucks compared to the recent ones:
