I Heart My National Park: Glacier

Montana's Glacier National Park is home to some 762 lakes, dozens of glaciers, and innumerable waterfalls that glisten in forested valleys. But perhaps best of all, a scenic highway and more than 700 miles of trails criss-cross the park, making much of its pristine beauty accessible to visitors. Geographer Richard Menicke arrived at Glacier in 1992, and quickly carved out a niche for himself as the park's foremost GIS specialist. Here's his insider guide to this "Crown of the Continent" jewel.

British Airways Wants to Take Away Lounge Access and Priority Boarding from Elites on the Lowest Fares

British Airways plans to exclude elite lounge access and priority boarding benefits from their lowest fares, extending the concept where these fares do not permit a free baggage allowance either.

That's a huge devaluation for British Airways members and also for American AAdvantage elites. And it's a really bad idea for BA, too.

New 50,000 Point Bonus On Citi Thank You Premier Card!

Beginning today, Citi has improved the sign-up bonus on their mid-tier card, the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card. You can now earn 50,000 bonus ThankYou Points after $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. The annual fee is waived the first year, and $95 per year thereafter.

Previously the card had a sign-up bonus of 20,000 points after $2,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening, and then an additional 30,000 points after another $3,000 in purchases within the first three months of your second year of being a cardmember. In other words, you had to wait a whole year (and pay the second year's annual fee) before earning the sign-up bonus (for those of us that like instant gratification, that's not so fun).

This improved sign-up bonus coincides with the positive changes which Citi made to this card as of yesterday, April 19, 2015.

Review: Air France Business Class Lounge Paris

Having had a harrowing experience on my flight from Madrid, I was desperate to land on solid ground and head to an Air France business class lounge for a bit of rest before my next flight.

I just wanted solid ground.

Upon deplaning, I noticed my connecting flight to New York was leaving from Terminal 2E, Gate M49, and we had arrived into terminal 2F. Now, in most airports, you'd think, "oh, Terminal 2E and 2F must be right next door to each other."

Villa Rose in Gland, Switzerland

Villa Rose

Located on the Toblerone defensive line in Switzerland, the Villa Rose is one of twelve fortresses that was built to defend the country from invasion during World War II. Although you could be forgiven for not knowing that since, from the outside it appears to be a garish pink suburban home.

This hidden stronghold was built in 1940 as part of a larger defensive line that is usually defined more by the miles of cement dragon's teeth connecting 12 fortresses including the Villa Rose. The fortification itself looks like a harmless two-story home but instead of a nuclear family lounging inside, the false house held massive guns. The large green garage door could open to reveal two huge cannons which were assisted by a third hidden behind the shutters of a ground floor window.

The whole thing was made of thick cement walls which were painted pink, apparently in an effort to make the fort seem even less harmless. There are even false windows on the second floor that are simply painted on the concrete.

The Villa Rose had a companion fortress along the Torblerone Line known as the Villa Vert which was a similarly disguised battlement that was painted green. Both of the villas were just a couple of examples of "false chalets" built all around Switzerland during the war. Villa Rose is the best maintained example of these secret forts and is now open as a museum.
