Totem Pole Park in Foyil, Oklahoma

Totem Pole Park

Located a few miles off of historic Route 66, one man's collection of homemade, concrete fetish decorations is home to a totem pole so large it actually has a room inside of it.

Oklahoma's Totem Pole Park is the work of local artisan Ed Galloway who created the attraction on his own across a number of decades. After leaving his job as an art teacher, Galloway began construction on his personal park in 1938. His main goal was to create a series of totem poles using sturdier building materials that were not readily available to the original American Indian artisans. Using concrete, rebar, and steel reinforcement, he created a number of colorful tapered totems on his land surrounding what is known as the "Fiddle House," which was modeled after a hendecagonal Navajo hogan, and which was itself supported by a series of cement totems.

The grandest creation in the park however is the main totem which took Galloway eleven years to finish and now would seem to hold the record for largest concrete totem pole in the world. The massive tower stands around 90 feet tall, and is completely covered in bright reliefs of animals and characters in a traditional American Indian style. The entire stack of looming facers and squashed beasts was made to sit on the back of a giant concrete turtle who looks a bit crushed by the weight of the world.

Galloway passed away in 1962, working until his dying day on the park. Unfortunately after his passing, the site fell into disrepair for decades until a conservation group formed to rehabilitate the animalistic works. However strange it may have seemed at the time, Galloway's mission to build a better totem pole apparently worked as the immovable stone spire continue to look nearly as good as the day they were sculpted.

ANA First Class Coming To Seattle, Singapore, And Frankfurt

Earlier today ANA announced some significant updates to their summer 2015 schedule.

With the updated 2015 summer schedule we're seeing a couple of dozen adjustments, including some new routes, new frequencies, and some aircraft swaps. I'd check out the entire new schedule, as there are quite a few swaps.

However, most interesting to me are the routes which are gaining Boeing 777-300ER service, which is the only type of plane in ANA's fleet with a first class cabin. Of course the fact that some routes are gaining 777-300ER service means that other routes are losing it.

I Heart My City: Hamza’s Fez

Fez native Hamza El Fasiki is a jack of all trades. The social entrepreneur, artist (he learned the traditional art of tea-tray etching from his father), musician (he plays a mean oud), and academic (he holds a Master's degree in Moroccan culture) has been led by his interests all around the world. Though Hamza's spent time in the U.S., Japan, Greece, and the United Arab Emirates, nothing can compare to his hometown. Here are a few of his favorite things about the "Athens of Africa."

Club Carlson Conundrum: Award, Revenue, Or Mix?

Ben recently wrote about the Q1 2015 Club Carlson Extend Your Stay (EYS) promotion where you can earn 30,000 bonus points for a 3+ night stay or 15,000 bonus points for a 2-night stay. Some are calling it the best hotel promotion of the first quarter. It caused me to break out the spreadsheet to determine how best to play this.

I usually don't hesitate to spend Club Carlson points since my family is blessed with six figure balances in the program after having capitalized on some past promotions. My wife and have the Club Carlson Visa card, so the points effectively go twice as far. But this promotion has the potential to be lucrative enough such that I could choose to spend some money. Scary, I know.

The decision in question involves our upcoming trip to Copenhagen. We considered two Radisson properties, Blu Royal and Blu Scandinavia. We had previously settled on Blu Scandinavia so I will use those numbers for my analysis.

Gotham Air’s New $99 Helicopter Between Manhattan And JFK/EWR

It looks like a new crowdsourced helicopter service is just around the corner in New York City.

Gotham Air seems to want to be the Uber equivalent of NYC helicopter transfers, in that they're basically facilitating helicopter trips through an alliance with Helicopter Flight Services, who have a fleet of helicopters. Here's the disclaimer on their site:

"Gotham Air is not a direct air carrier but rather provides technology and information services enabling consumers to obtain aircraft charter services from FAA certified and DOT registered air carriers who exercise operational control over all flights."

Royal Air Maroc Joining Star Alliance?

As I've said before, I'm always excited when smaller airlines join the major alliances, even if they don't necessarily have the best reputation. That's because often it is most practical to fly those airlines, and ultimately you're better off being able to earn and redeem miles on them, not to mention take advantage of consistent elite benefits.

While oneworld seems to be on a kick lately with new member acquisitions, it looks like Star Alliance may have a small victory up their sleeve. Rumor has it that Royal Air Maroc is in the final stages of negotiations with Star Alliance, and that a formal announcement about them joining Star Alliance should be made in the coming days.

Royal Air Maroc would be the fourth African Star Alliance member airline, after EgyptAir, Ethiopian, and South African Airways.
