The Dreaded Cape Buffalo

I realized I really don’t Know My Animals When we were driving around Botswana, we saw all sorts of amazing animals. It was just then I realized I don’t know the names of hardly anything. I mean, I got the easy ones like giraffes and elephants, but they have all these other crazy animals with […]

Get a Refund on Exorbitant UK Aviation Taxes, 500 Free Miles, and Which Politicians Fly Coach…

News and notes from around the interweb: Do you remember paying international departure taxes at the airport, when you’d go through immigration on the way out of a country? For the most part all taxes are now collected with tickets, and airlines remit them to the relevant governments. This makes things much easier. Yet the […]

Starting Tomorrow United Will Offer Corporate Status Matches — Up to 1K — for 22 Months!

On January 1 I noted that United was waiving their minimum revenue requirement for elite status for some members who had flown enough but not spent enough in 2014. There was some speculation that United was losing too many elites. It’s not that they want low spending elites, per se, but a program certain manages […]

4 Predictions For The Rite Aid Free Hyatt Night Promo

Last week I wrote about the Happy You Year promotion that Rite Aid is currently running in a post titled Two Free Hyatt Nights for $250 Spend at Rite Aid. Essentially the deal is that you spend $250 on participating items at Rite Aid and you receive either a 2-night stay at select Hyatt hotels or a 7-night stay at a Wyndham resort. On the surface, this sounds like a really good deal.

However, the more I read about it, the more this promotion started to sound like the JC Penny / Dockers promotion from 2007. The fulfillment company for that promotion was TLC Marketing. It generally did not go well for consumers, ultimately ending in a lawsuit. (Though certainly some of us did do well.)

Anyway, I pointed out that the redemption process in the current promo was similarly onerous. The economics were similarly unsustainable. The mailing address was in the same city as TLC Marketing. I basically put down a lot of dots on a paper, but then said we didn't know who the fulfillment company was yet, so we really couldn't connect those dots.

When something smells like a duck, quacks like a duck, swims like a duck, and looks like a duck (even when that Duck is dressed like an Oakland Raider), it almost always is, in fact, a duck.

Review: Singapore Airlines First Class 777-300ER Singapore To Melbourne

We were originally scheduled to be on an A380 between Singapore and Melbourne, though due to a schedule change the route is now exclusively operated by a Boeing 777-300ER. Initially I was disappointed at being downgraded from Suites Class to First Class. Then again, for a daytime flight I didn't think we'd suffer too badly. ;)

We boarded through the forward door, where we were greeted by our three person first class crew, including inflight supervisor Vienna, leading stewardess Michelle, and leading steward Jimmy. We weren't on the plane for more than five seconds before I could tell we were in for an amazing flight. You expect a high level of service from Singapore, but these three were beyond top notch.

We were brought to our seats in row one, where we had the two center seats assigned.

Silvercar LAX Review

I’ve written extensively about Silvercar, which is the car rental company which is trying to do to the car rental industry what Uber is doing to the limo industry.

I dread renting cars. 90% of the time you get some piece of crap where you have to tilt the steering wheel 10 degrees in order to keep the car driving straight.

Silvercar is simple. They have one type of car, an Audi A4, and they take a lot of the other hassle out of the car rental process as well – they’ll fill up the car at “fair” fuel prices when your return it, they have fair tolling, satellite radio, etc.

Today Only: Alaska Passing On Fuel Savings With 10-20% Discount On Tickets

With fuel prices down, a lot of consumers ask "why aren't airlines passing on the savings?" The answer is simple, because the cost of tickets is in no way linked to the cost of fuel. Instead it's based on capacity and demand, and right now capacity is down and demand is up, which is why fares are up. It's the same reason fares weren't higher when the airlines were on the brink of bankruptcy and fuel prices were sky high. ;)

That being said, Alaska is running a promotion entitled "Paying it Forward," the premise of which being that they're saving on fuel prices lately and want to pass that on. Of course it's just a marketing gimmick, but at least it's a cute one.

Through this promotion they're offering discounts of 10-20% using promotion code FUELSAVINGS. The basic terms are as follows:
