The Best Travel Tips, Everything You Want to Know From the Last Month in One Post

I post 5-7 items a day. Not everything is interesting to everyone, and many of the posts are truly 'real time' or as a story develops. Some once a month I look back, see what stories turned out to be the most interesting and enduring, the things you should probably know if you haven't already read them.

Take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks!

Has Qatar Airways Stopped Serving Krug In The Al Mourjan Lounge Doha?

Last year we finally saw the opening of the new Hamad International Airport in Doha, which was a huge upgrade over their old airport. The airport experienced some substantial delays, including a huge delay in the opening of Qatar Airways' lounges.

I've written about the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Lounge, which is the nicest lounge Qatar Airways presently has open in Doha. This lounge is used for both Qatar Airways' first and business class passengers, and is quite nice for a business class lounge.

Possibly the highlight is that up until now they have served Krug in the lounge, which is my favorite champagne out there. Interestingly they don't serve Krug on the lower level of the lounge or in the restaurant area, but rather only when you go to the bar on the second floor and specifically ask for it.

When Starwood’s Purchased Upgrades Are Worth It

Each hotel company has different features. Travel photographer and writer Erika Skogg (on Instagram @ErikaSkogg) spends most of the year guiding students on photography trips with National Geographic Expeditions. She recently returned from a journey through Peru, a trip she has been lucky enough to have done many times before, including a lengthy stop in Cusco. The Best Cards for Big Bonuses – and for Benefits – Right Now

There are 3 reasons to get a rewards credit card. They can offer great bonuses for signing up, they can offer good earning for your ongoing spend, and they can offer great benefits just for holding the card.

But which are the cards actually worth getting... and which ones are actually worth keeping?

I'll look at the top 5 cards in each of those categories right now to help you sort through which ones you'll want to get for the bonus, which ones you'll want to put your spending on once you've earned the bonus, and which you should simply keep in your wallet for the perks.

Why You Should Take A Short Term Approach To The Points Hobby

Reader/professional dissenter/Hilton fanboy DCS left the following comment on a post yesterday, which I found interesting:

"The mentality in the travel blogosphere that emphasizes short-term gains over longer-term returns needs to be discouraged, in my view."

One of the things I love about this hobby is how virtually everyone takes a different approach towards it. I know people that earn and burn their points, and I know people that view their points as a retirement account of sorts, and just hoard them for decades on end.

I don't want to concretely say that one approach is better than the other, but I definitely fall more in the former category than the latter.

Flying on a Mistake Fare? You’re Not a Customer Whose Business We Want to Incentivize.

American is honoring recent business class mistake fares to China. But those fares are front of mind as the airline rolls out new bonuses for premium customers -- and AAdvantage is going out of its way *not* to award mistake fare passengers even more than they are already are. Is this a good strategy? Is it fair?

ANA Downgrades First Class Amenity Kits To Samsonite

I've never been much for collecting material things, which might explain why I have a reasonably easy time living out of a carry-on full time.

However, one of the few exceptions are Rimowa amenity kits, which several airlines have offered premium cabin passengers over the years. They're basically miniature Rimowa suitcases, though they each have the logos of their respective airlines on them.

Over the years I've collected several styles of Rimowa amenity kits from ANA, EVA Air, Lufthansa, and Thai Airways.

This Is What $65/Night Gets You In The Maldives

There's no pleasure without a bit of pain, and I think there aren't many better examples of that in the travel hobby than getting to the Maldives.

Let me tell you, the journey to the Maldives wasn't an easy one. I flew from New York to Hong Kong to Bangkok to Colombo to Male, getting in at 1:30AM.

Then at 7:30AM I had a flight on the local Maldivian airline to the airport closest to the Park Hyatt.

Realistically I couldn't make it to any hotel near Male Airport before 2AM, and I'd have to leave by 6:15AM to catch my domestic flight.

Grave of Daniel Boone in Frankfort, Kentucky

Grave of Daniel Boone

One of the archetypal American frontiersmen, Daniel Boone is buried in Frankfort Cemetery with his wife Rebecca on a high bluff overlooking Kentucky's capital city. However, people from Missouri, where Boone spent the last 20 years of his life, might have you believe otherwise.

Daniel Boone led one of the earliest waves of settlers into Kentucky County, then part of Virginia. His story was published by John Filson (with some embellishment) in 1784, which was then translated into various European languages, and establishing his myth in the new United States and the world. Failures in land speculating would lead to Boone relocating to present-day West Virginia and later Missouri to continue hunting and trapping until his death in 1820.

He was buried near Marthasville, Missouri just west of St. Louis, but in 1845 both Daniel's and Rebecca's bodies were disinterred and moved to Frankfort Cemetery. There is disagreement to this day as to whether the Boones' bodies are the proper ones, or if some are in Kentucky and some in Missouri.

Starwood Lets You Redeem Points for Luxury Concert Suites and Intimate Performances
