The Importance of Innovation: Why I Love Elephant Jumps

Back in April I wrote that Elephant Jumps Thai restaurant in Northern Virginia is cooking at a whole different level (and implored that you should go now). While I thought it was really good four years ago, it was more or less just at the top tier of Thai restaurants. But it started getting even […]

Wind Gust On Landing At Madeira Airport!

Madeira Airport is ranked one of the most dangerous airports in the world, given the consistently strong wind gusts and mountainous terrain around the airport. It's also a fascinating airport, given that the runway is built out over the water.

There are a ton of crazy landing videos at Madeira Airport, though one of the craziest I've seen was uploaded earlier in the week.

Check out the video of this TUIfly 737 which has some strong wind gusts on final approach:

Weekly Review: October 25, 2014

I've spent nearly the entire week recuperating from a cold (and convincing my mom I don't have ebola), but fortunately there has been lots of interesting frequent flyer news to keep me occupied.

I've also had the chance to catch up a bit on trip reports, so you can expect many more installments next week!

Cathay Pacific’s Brand Refresh 2014

This week Cathay Pacific has unveiled their rebranding, or I suppose brand refresh would be a more accurate term. They're calling it "the next chapter," and they've set up a website dedicated to the brand refresh. Here's how they describe it:

"Today, we welcome a simpler, cleaner, more customer-focused Cathay Pacific brand.

Our airline has been built on an absolute dedication to customers, service, quality and safety. As we continue on our journey, we are now unveiling a new design philosophy that will help us shape an even better experience for our customers.

The fruit of an 18-month preparation effort, this new philosophy will guide the design of new websites, lounges, cabins, in-flight service, entertainment products and much more – all with greater consistency, beauty and efficiency. Beyond this, it also clearly defines who we are and what inspires us to help passengers travel well."

The Secret Sauce: How Your Airline/Hotel Credit Card Actually Works

A question I got yesterday in the comments prompted me to put together a post explaining how airline credit cards work — how co-brand credit card deals get put together by banks, airline or hotel company, and payment network like Visa or MasterCard. (With American Express, the card issuer and payment network is usually the […]

Robert Genn’s Last Year to Live

They considered how to spend the time they had left together. There were thoughts of trips to Hawaii or the Galapagos, but Genn wanted to end his life as he had lived it: in his studio, making art, with his family close by. James fashioned a reclining chair so his father could continue to paint,…

Apparently US Airways Economy Is Now Business Class

Yesterday I flew US Airways from Chicago to Tampa via Charlotte using British Airways Avios. American didn't have award availability on the nonstop and revenue fares were ~$500, so at 9,000 Avios one-way it was the best value.

I'm still trying to learn the whole US Airways system, because it doesn't make much sense to me. For example, after putting my Executive Platinum number on the reservation I was given these seating options at check-in:

So I have to pay $49 to reserve seemingly arbitrary seats, which aren't in exit rows, or extra legroom, or...?

Anyway, I had selected seat 6C, which is an aisle seat in the second row of economy on the Airbus A321.

Boeing Sales to Iran, Life Advice, Jet Lag and Weight Gain, and the TWA Terminal at JFK

News and notes from around the interweb: Someone was foolish enough to ask me for life advice, and just crazy enough to publish it. Alaska Status Matching To MVP Gold 75K

While I fly dozens of airlines a year, I have two frequent flyer programs I'm most loyal to -- American AAdvantage and Alaska Mileage Plan.

I'm Executive Platinum with American, which is also the airline on which a vast majority of my revenue flying is. The status is invaluable, and I've yet to fly economy on a revenue ticket with American this year (though a fair amount of my flying has been using upgrades confirmed in advance, as well as some "cheap" paid premium cabin tickets).

I'm also MVP Gold 75K with Alaska, which is new loyalty for me as of the past two years, which is when I moved to Seattle. Alaska Airlines is really quirky, and I kind of love them for that. Their planes are pretty homely for the most part, though they have good employees and an excellent frequent flyer program.

Cadillac Test Drive Miles Promotion Pulled Early: What Happened?

At the beginning of the month I spoke with American AAdvantage President Suzanne Rubin and Cadillac’s Chief Marketing Officer Uwe Ellinghaus about the new marketing tie up between the two companies.
