How I Booked a Business Class Award for a Family of Eight

I know few people who speak passionately about their luggage. More important to frequent fliers is what’s in the carry-on. And these days, it’s all technology. How To Talk To Airline Phone Agents

Through my award booking service I spend a fair amount of time on the phone with airlines. And by “fair amount of time” I mean roughly half my life.

So I have a decent bit of experience with talking to airline reservations agents, and there are a few things I've picked up over the years.

BE POLITE

In general, my approach is always to be nice and try and get the agent to feel like we're on the same "side" in booking an award.

And I truly think this makes a difference. No one wants to be bad at their job, so calling and demanding certain flights or telling an agent they're incompetent isn't going to get you very far, in my experience.

Barrio Hopping in Buenos Aires

With the energy of New York, the feel of Paris, and the chaotic pace of a major Latin American city all rolled into one, Buenos Aires is in a class of its own. Travelers have long flocked here to sample Argentina's famous wine and beef and to be seduced by the tango, but the city is gaining acclaim for another reason: its never-ending nightlife. Here's my recipe for a hedonistic long weekend in the Argentinian capital.

Review: W Seattle Hotel

Since I lived in the Seattle area for 18 months, it had been years since I've checked out the local hotel offerings. So during my recent trip to Seattle I figured I'd check out a few new properties. I love the Hyatt options in Seattle -- I usually stay at the Hyatt Olive 8, though love the Grand Hyatt as well. I'll have reviews of both of them soon.

However, during my recent visit both Hyatt options were sold out one of the nights, so I instead booked the W Seattle, which had a rate of ~$200.

I really hesitated to book the hotel, because long time readers will know I strongly dislike most US W properties. Abroad Ws are among my favorite hotels -- the W Taipei, W Sentosa Cove Singapore, W Guangzhou, and W Doha are all absolutely fantastic beyond words. But in the US, W properties just leave a lot to be desired, in my opinion.

LifeMiles Award Chart Devaluation Coming

Since joining the Star Alliance a bit over two years ago, Avianca's LifeMiles program has proven to be one of the more useful programs for premium cabin Star Alliance redemptions. They had a rough time at first, as they made a few award chart changes without notice, which were met with a lot of frustration by members.

Back in July, LifeMiles announced that they would be devaluing their award chart as of October 15, 2014. Of course nobody likes to see award chart devaluations, though to their credit they gave plenty of advance notice, which I far prefer to their previous system of unannounced devaluations. A few days after they announced the changes, they released their new Star Alliance award chart, which kicks in then. The changes are substantial though not horrible, in my opinion.
