Another Beautiful Night under the Quiver Trees in Namibia

Star Shot Pano This was actually created with 6 different photos. I made a little grid in the sky with 3 boxes across and 2 rows tall. I did this mostly because I was shooting on the resolution A7S and the 35mm F/1.4. I just could not get all of the Milky Way with one […]

What Does It Mean to Be Rich?

When you’re a kid, you don’t have much concept of what true wealth is—so you tend to relate it to experiences, or at least I did. In my case, I understood wealth in the context of fast-food restaurants. I used to eat at my favorite restaurants, McDonald’s and Burger King, as often as I could.…

Don’t Mess Up The New Hyatt Promo By Making This One Simple Mistake

Hyatt revealed their new promotion for the first quarter. And while the offers are targeted and vary by member, on the whole they seem more lucrative than what Starwood and Marriott are offering. Nothing world-changing, but definitely worth registering for. Here’s the thing. You go to the promotion page. You’re required to enter your Gold […]

Heads Up: Giveaways On Saturday

Just a quick heads up that I'll be running a couple of giveaways throughout the day tomorrow.

First, I have 100 Award Wallet Plus upgrade codes to give out. These give you six months of extra services such as tracking expiration dates, which is incredibly helpful. People always complain that these go too quickly and without notice, so I'll be posting these in two batches at 1PM and 7PM Eastern.

That should hopefully give more people an opportunity to snatch up one of these codes. They'll be first-come-first-served, as usual.

Review: Emirates First Class Lounge Dubai DXB

Emirates is by far the largest operator of the A380, so it's not surprising that Dubai is the first airport in the world to have a terminal dedicated exclusively to the A380. Part of this new terminal is the new Emirates A380 First Class Lounge. I actually visited this lounge back in early 2013 when it first had its soft opening, though figured I'd review it again since it has been a couple of years, and the lounge is now fully operational.

Anyway, we were picked up by an Emirates car at around 10PM, for our 3:15AM departure to Singapore. The drive took about 10 minutes, and we were dropped off in the area of the terminal dedicated to first and business class check-in.

The premium check-in area is massive, and that's not really a good thing.

Before we even went to pick up our boarding passes we took a quick look at the departures board. It's crazy just how many flights Emirates operates in the middle of the night.

Airline Companion Passes: How to Earn and Redeem Them

Airline Companion Passes are a great tool in helping to stretch miles and save cash on airfare. Hyatt’s New Promotion Details Finally Revealed, What Did You Get?

By now, most of the major hotel chains have announced their global first quarter 2015 promotions, including Club Carlson, IHG Rewards Club, Marriott Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest.

Meanwhile Hyatt shared a while back that they'll be announcing their next global promotion on January 12. While they've been slow to reveal the details, they sure have been hyping the promotion quite a bit through social media.

Well, it looks like Hyatt decided to release the promotion details a bit early, as Hyatt has now unveiled the details of their Stay More Play more promotion.

United Copies American This Time With Big Premium Cabin Mileage Bonuses as a Stopgap Until They Go Revenue-Based

United is copying Delta’s revenue-based mileage earning for flights that started January 1, but it’s taking MileagePlus until March 1 to get it up and running. Easy 50,000 American Miles With CitiBusiness AAdvantage MasterCard

The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World MasterCard® offers 50,000 AAdvantage miles after spending $3,000 within three months with a $95 annual fee, which is waived the first year. It's tough to beat a card with an annual fee that's waived the first year, big sign-up bonus, and reasonable minimum spend.

I value American miles at ~1.8 cents each, so you're getting about $900 worth of miles with the sign-up bonus alone.

The sign-up bonus is what makes this card particularly compelling, but there are some additional perks to be aware of as well.

What Is Hidden City Ticketing?

The big airline industry news of the past week or so has been about the 22 year old founder of the website Skiplagged, who is being sued by United and Orbitz. Among other things, his website helped people take advantage of hidden city ticketing.

There's no denying that airlines have made revenue and inventory management such a complex art that it's virtually incomprehensible to the average consumer. That's because the airlines want to squeeze every possible cent out of consumers based on what they perceive their willingness to pay is. This is why we have things like minimum stay requirements, advance purchase requirements, day of the week requirements, different fares based on whether you're traveling nonstop or connecting, etc.

Using a combination of all these things, the airlines feel like they can not only figure out who's a business traveler and who's a leisure traveler, but also how much each person within those groups is willing to pay.

Hyatt’s First Quarter Promotion Will Be “One Of Their Best”

Most of the major hotel chains have announced their global first quarter 2015 promotions by now, including Club Carlson, IHG Rewards Club, Marriott Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest.

Meanwhile Hyatt Gold Passport has been fairly tight-lipped about their promotion, other than announcing that it will debut on Monday, January 12, 2015. Hyatt is one of my two primary hotel chains, so I'm especially curious about their promotion so that I can plan my first quarter hotel stays accordingly.

For the past couple of years most Hyatt promotions have been capped at a fairly low reward threshold, like 20 nights, in which case it doesn't really impact my decisions, since I'll exceed that threshold either way.
