Looking Down From the Bell Tower in Beijing

New Perspectives with Drones I really like this top-down view that you get from drones. It’s so interesting to me… I follow a few other quadcopter photographers that do this also, and I’ve seen a few comment that it’s now “passé” — which I find to be ridiculous! I love looking at them and I […]

TSA Questions Scientist Trying to Bring His Nobel Prize Through Security

Nobel laureate Brian Schmidt brought his Nobel Prize to Fargo, North Dakota to show it to his grandmother. That was suspicious. When Nobel laureate Brian Schmidt was asked at airport security if anyone had given him an item to carry on board, he had confess that someone had: the King of Sweden. The astrophysicist, who […]

US Airways A330 Business Class London To Charlotte

Yesterday I flew US Airways A330 business class from London to Charlotte. It was my backup option, after unsuccessfully trying to get onto a wide open American flight between London and New York.

I was curious to try US Airways business class again, after my flight on them last October between Charlotte and Paris. As some of you may recall, Ms. Peggy was serving my aisle on that flight (and use of the word "serving" is very generous), and suffice to say she left a sour taste in my mouth about the experience.

So how did this flight stack up?

Can You Ask American To Open Award Space?

Yesterday I wrote a post entitled "How Stingy Is American With First Class Award Space?" I was trying to get from London to New York, and American had two flights without a single seat sold in first class, yet they didn't have any saver level award availability. There has been a trend over the past several years whereby American is releasing less and less award space, and t0 me this is the epitome of the situation.

Those seats would literally otherwise go empty, which they'd apparently prefer to getting mileage liability off the books, and more importantly, making a frequent flyer happy. It's amazing how quickly the airlines forget why they're in business. In this case, specifically, American wouldn't be in business if it weren't for Citi (they pre-purchased a billion dollars worth of miles from American when they were in bankruptcy and and on the verge of going out of business).

Anyway, as an experiment I thought it would be fun to see if I could get anyone at American to actually apply logic to the situation and open up some award space. Gary has written in the past about the ability to request American award space under certain situations when it's not otherwise possible. The circumstances under which you can normally make the request for AAdvantage award space are:

Do Hotels Have Coffee All Wrong?

People often ask me how I overcome jetlag when traveling. My answer is pretty simple -- coffee. Lots of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

I do talk about hotel coffee quite a bit on the blog, partly because it's something I spend a lot of time thinking about while in my hotel room jetlagged at 3AM. When a hotel has a good coffee setup it instantly gives me a favorable impression of the property, though I realize I'm probably in the minority on that one.

For example, I love the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport if for no other reason than that they set up a complimentary espresso machine and croissants in the lobby in the morning. I know it sounds crazy, but I always look forward to waking up in that hotel at 4AM for that alone. What can I say... it's the simple things in life. ;)

Last Chance: US Airways, LifeMiles And Amazon Payments

There are a few important deadlines approaching which I figured I'd post a quick reminder of, since I assume some of you will want to take advantage of them:

Today is the last day to purchase US Airways miles with a 100% bonus. Originally the promotion was supposed to run through September 30, though they extended it through today, October 12, 2014.

Usually that's not really noteworthy, since historically US Airways has had some bonus on the purchase of miles just about every month. However, according to Gary, US Airways will be changing the way they sell miles going forward. While we don't know what exactly that entails (an annual limit on the number of miles you can purchase, raising the cost of purchasing miles, etc.), if you want to buy miles for ~1.88 cents each, this is apparently your last chance.

Lufthansa Continues To Cut First Class Capacity

There's no denying that I love Lufthansa first class, which might explain why I've flown it as much as I have. It's just such a lovely product, and one of the few airlines that has a truly top notch ground and onboard experience, in my opinion.

Early last year, Lufthansa announced that they would be cutting first class on ~20% of their longhaul fleet, which certainly made me sad. At the time they had first class on 94 of their 100 longhaul aircraft, while they had plans to reduce that to 75 aircraft over the next two years. At the time, the source for the first class cuts came primarily in two areas:

-- A340-300 aircraft -- the plan was to install the new business class product on these planes and eliminate first class entirely

-- 747-400 aircraft -- at the time six of Lufthansa's 747-400s didn't yet feature the new first class, so the plan was to just install the new business class product on them and eliminate first class

Framing Decisions in the Context of Future Regret

The “Will I regret it in the future?” mindset can be very helpful in making decisions. From a New York Times article on protests in Hong Kong: “I’m not sure if this protest will really affect the decision by China, but I’m sure if I don’t come I will regret it in the future,” said…

Marriott Changing Global Cancellation Policy

Via Travel Update, it looks like Marriott will be changing their global hotel cancellation policy as of January 1, 2015.

According to the new policy, you'll have until 11:59PM the day prior to arrival to cancel your room without penalty. Interestingly it seems as if Marriott is somewhat forcing this policy on their hotels:

"Marriott expects that “most hotels will want to follow the new policy,” according to the email. Marriott, in fact, is telling franchised hotels that if they want to opt out of the new policy and continue offering a “day of arrival” cancellation deadline, they must request permission to do so."
