Uber $30 First Ride Credit is Back!

Readers know that I’m a big fan of Uber, the on-demand car service. You download an app to your phone, request a pickup with the press of a button. You watch your vehicle on a map as it drives to you and shows you how many minutes away the car is. You can stay inside […]

It’s My Birthday, But You’re Getting The Presents!

Well, technically it’s the blog’s birthday... ;)

I started the blog seven years ago next Wednesday, which is incredible to me on so many levels.

For starters, I didn’t know a thing about internet technology, or blogging for that matter. I wasn’t (and still am not) a great writer. But I was crazy passionate about miles, points, and travel, so it seemed worth trying.

I didn’t expect to make it a month.

Hello from Abu Dhabi! I am here with my mom, and it has been a fun and relaxing trip so far!

I can't wait to share her thoughts and reactions with you guys in the coming weeks. Let's just say she may still be recovering from a hangover after our Emirates flight. ;)

Travel TV Star Peter Greenberg Didn’t Want to Go to a Meeting Anymore, Thinks Orbitz or American Should Pay Him for That

Paris 100 years ago

When one knows Paris as it is now - cramped, noisy, polluted - it is hard to imagine that it used to look like a village with women selling flowers out of carts, horse-drawn vehicles on the Alexandre III bridge, and a traffic-free Place de la Concorde.

Alaska Airlines Now Blocking Emirates Business Class Awards?

Goodness, the situation between Alaska and Emirates keeps getting worse. Long story short, up until now we've known that Emirates first class awards aren't bookable using Alaska miles for travel after March 28, 2015. Here are the previous posts on the subject:

-- Alaska Blocking Emirates Award Space?

-- Are Emirates First Class Redemptions Using Alaska Miles Going Away?

-- Official Statement From Alaska Regarding Emirates Award Availability

-- Update Regarding Emirates Awards Using Alaska Miles

Up until now that has been the extent of the problem, though. Alaska Mileage Plan members haven't had access to Emirates first class award availability, though have had access to all other saver level business and economy class availability, best I can tell.

In Defense of Korean Air’s “Nut Rage” Executive, And Why a US Airline Should Hire Her

SimplyCash Business Card: Last Day To Select 3% Cash Back Category

I've written in the past about the SimplyCash® Business Card from American Express, which is one of the most compelling no annual fee business credit cards I’ve seen. They’re offering a $250 statement credit after spending $5,000 on qualifying purchases within the first six months of card membership. Here are few of the details:

There aren’t many rewarding business credit cards out there without an annual fee — this is a pretty big selling point, in my opinion.

The card has a cash back based rewards system, with some nice bonus categories:

United’s Secret Award Discount Still Works: Save Up to 25,000 Miles Roundtrip for Business Class Partner Awards

Two months ago I wrote about United’s unpublished business class partner award discount. United has been charging less for partner awards than their award chart says they will, charging as though you were flying just on United (perhaps a technical glitch rollings back a big chunk of the Great Devaluation). For US – Europe, business […]

Next Asiana A380 Destination: New York JFK

Last August, Asiana launched their first A380 longhaul flight, between Los Angeles and Seoul Incheon.

I had the chance to fly from Los Angeles to Seoul Incheon in A380 first class last October, and quite enjoyed it. I'm a huge fan of Asiana in terms of the food and service. And while they were good as always, I don't really think Asiana "stepped up their game" in terms of the overall product on the A380 compared to the product on the 777.

Anyway, Asiana has a total of six A380 orders, and so far only two have been delivered. So while they'll operate among the smallest A380 fleets of any airline (along with China Southern, Malaysia Airlines, and Thai Airways), clearly there are still some longhaul A380 routes in their future.

American’s Fleet Plans for 2015: Here are the Planes They’re Getting, and What They’re Getting Rid Of

American’s fleet will shrink by about 30 aircraft over the next year, netting new planes coming in and more than 100 retirements. Uber $30 First Ride Bonus Is Back

As I’ve explained many times in the past, Uber is one of those companies that uses technology to make life better. When public transportation in a city isn’t good, I used to get really frustrated by the lack of options and taxi “mafias,” though for the cities in which Uber operates I love them. They have UberBLACK, which is the “standard” service and a bit more than a taxi, while they also have UberX, which is usually cheaper than a taxi. And thanks to the instant feedback loop (you rating the driver and the driver rating you), service is excellent across the board, in my experience.

Uber has long offered sign-up and referral bonuses, whereby both the person referring and the person being referred get a bonus. For much of last year, Uber offered a $30 referral bonus, though they ended that on November 23, 2014. Since then the bonus has instead been $20.
