Glenorchy Cafe If you do ever head out to Glenorchy, be sure to eat at the rather generically named “Glenorchy Cafe” — it’s super tasty! We go there every time… and there is some very evil desserts there too that are not to be missed! Daily Photo – Scarlett on the Path Here's Scarlett posing […]

Travel Tip of the Week: Avoid Amateur Day at All Costs

Baseball Hall of Famer Wee Willie Keeler is possibly best known for his advice to batters, “hit ‘em where they ain’t.” If he wasn’t one of the best hitters of all time, and likely the creator of the hit and run — and of course if he had been active a hundred years later — […]

Weekly Review: November 8, 2014

Good afternoon from sunny Tampa!

After a quick trip to Frankfurt I am visiting my parents in Florida, where the weather is significantly better. ;)

Next week I leave on my dad's big birthday trip, so there will be lots of fun updates from the road.

I apologize for the lack of trip report updates this week, as it has been an absolutely crazy week. Sub-48 hour trips to Germany generally don't help in the "gotta catch up on writing" department.

That being said, I promise to get the "A380 Addiction" trip report done before I embark on the big trip!

You Can Get a First Class Upgrade Almost Every Time, Even If You Don’t Have Top Elite Status

Earlier this week I requalified for American’s 100,000 mile flyer status, Executive Platinum. As a top tier elite I usually get my first class upgrade, even on tough routes and flights. Although even as an Executive Platinum I know that there are still tough upgrades out there. For instance, I’ve been number 14 on the […]

On Berlin Wall Anniversary, Somber Notes Amid Revelry

Most Germans are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the wall’s opening, but for relatives of those killed trying to cross the barrier it is a time of sadness.

No One Wants To Hear About Your Great Trip

Thanks to my good pal Andrew B for sending along the following email:

"I wonder if this means that everyone hates you all the time, since this is kind of what you do for a living:

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/11/06/great-vacation-dont-brag-to-your-friends/"

The NY Times story is actually worth a read, in my opinion. It suggests that people enjoy talking about experiences they have in common -- no matter how boring -- while they don't enjoy hearing about experiences they can't relate to:

Admirals Club Members Now Get More Board Room Access

I'd be willing to bet that over the coming years the relationship between American and Alaska will be strengthened. Up until now, Alaska's closest partner has been Delta, though with their "Battle in Seattle" we've slowly seen them pull apart from one another, including cutting benefits to partner elite members.

While perhaps not directly related to this, it's worth noting that American Airlines Admirals Club members now receive access to Alaska Airlines Board Rooms under more circumstances.

Previously, Admirals Club members would only receive access to Alaska Board Rooms if flying on American flights. In other words, if an Admirals Club member were flying on Alaska they wouldn't receive access to the Board Room. In a way I get it, in a way that seems a bit backwards.

Anyway, this has now been changed for the better -- Admirals Club members now receive Board Room access regardless of whether they're flying Alaska, American, or US Airways. This is awesome news.

Flights Between New York And Miami Are Wretched

I don't think I could ever be a flight attendant. There are only so many times I could say "sir, I don't think that's gonna fit" before I chug a beer and pop the slide.

And that brings me to my flight on Thursday from New York JFK to Miami.

People seem to think that flights to/from Las Vegas are the toughest to work. And yes, having 11 people removed from a plane sucks. But I still don't think they have anything on flights between New York and Miami.

Why is the route so bad?

How to Find Award Space and 20% Off December Flights

News and notes from around the interweb: The ANA website has been indispensable as a place to search for award space on Star Alliance partners.
