It's really interesting to see how much effort airlines are putting into safety videos nowadays. In many cases the videos are so entertaining that they go viral and people watch them from home, which says a lot.
Unarguably Air New Zealand does the best job, as they seem to have a new super-creative video every few months. For those of you that haven't seen it, here's their latest Hobbit themed safety video:
But I think Air New Zealand needs to move over, because EL AL's low cost carrier, UP, might just have one-UPped them for the title of the most epic safety video ever:

I'm often asked why award tickets to the UK involve so many taxes and fuel surcharges.
There's a ton of confusion among consumers about the difference between taxes and fuel surcharges. That's largely the airlines' fault, given that for so long they've tried to bundle "taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges" into one, when they're in fact very different things.
I think it's important to clarify the difference between the two high "fees" you may face when traveling to/from/through the UK.

Generally I'll choose an a la carte menu over a buffet any day of the week. Because I'm a selective germaphobe, and buffets are nasty (and that doesn't even account for the fact that they invariably result in overeating... nom nom nom).
But after having breakfast at the Park Hyatt New York the other morning, I think I've changed my mind. Fancy hotels shouldn't be allowed to have a la carte menus. Because people are ridiculous.

One of the things that has always impressed me about Alaska Airlines is their 20 minute baggage guarantee. They guarantee that checked bags will arrive at the carousel within 20 minutes of your plane arriving in the gate, or else you receive a $25 Alaska discount code or 2,500 Mileage Plan miles.
The way Alaska handles checked bags really makes you wonder where other airlines go wrong. I've checked Alaska bags dozens of times, and they've always arrived within 20 minutes. As a matter of fact, they're the only airline I consistently check bags on. Since they start boarding earlier than just about any other airline, I usually just check bags with them and then board last minute.
I've asked people at Alaska about this policy, and they're quite modest about it. They've always told me something along the lines of "well it really isn't that difficult once you set the standard that our employees and ground handling contract workers have to follow." And it works.
