NYPD Officer (Sort Of) Apologizes To Uber Driver After Tirade

Last week I posted the insane video of the NYPD officer who abusively went off on an Uber driver:

You've gotta love that virtually everyone is a cameraman nowadays thanks to smartphones, so the interaction was caught on tape. Within days the officer was identified and even demoted due to his actions.

On top of that, it looks like over the weekend he appeared on a local New York City station to issue an apology... or something like that:

Life Outside The oneworld Bubble

Hello! By way of introduction, I'm a friend of Ben and a One Mile at a Time blog reader and I'm honored that he's invited me to guest post now and then.

Unlike many points-and-miles bloggers, I rank fairly low on the totem pole as far as elite status and butt-in-seat miles are concerned. I don't travel often for my job, and were I to do mileage runs left and right and be on a plane for 36 hours a weekend, it would surely lead to impending divorce.

But, I love travel, I love airlines and hotels, and I love the challenge of accruing and redeeming points. I have elite status with Delta and low-level elite status with Hyatt (through my Hyatt Chase Visa) and Starwood (through the AmEx Platinum card) and that's about it, but I hope I can bring you guys my perspective of being a "casual traveler" who still enjoys the points-and-miles hobby in moderation. I also like to think that I bring the perspective of not being in the oneworld "bubble."

An Amazing (Private) Flight On SriLankan!

Hello from the Maldives (more on that later!)

Over the weekend I flew from New York to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific, and then from Hong Kong to Bangkok to Colombo to Male on SriLankan. To say that it was a long travel day would be the understatement of the year.

The three flights on SriLankan were especially interesting. Generally I'm a huge fan of the airline, as there's something exotic and unique about them which makes them more "fun" than most airlines.

But the service on the first two sectors was kind of crappy. The crews were lazy and borderline rude.

Two Air India Pilots Got In A Fight Over WHAT?!

The story is going around of two Air India pilots who allegedly got in a cockpit fight yesterday after the captain asked the first officer to write down critical information (how dare he!!!).

Via Yahoo News:

"The co-pilot allegedly assaulted the captain inside the cockpit as they were preparing the passenger plane for takeoff from the Indian tourist city of Jaipur to New Delhi on Sunday night, the Hindustan Times newspaper said.

The co-pilot was irritated by his superior's request to write down critical information for the flight, such as the number of passengers on board, take off weight and fuel uptake, the Times Of India reported."

Delta 20 Minute Baggage Guarantee Extended Indefinitely

In February of this year, Delta announced a new 20 minute checked baggage guarantee. Through their “Bags On Time” guarantee, Delta guarantees that your checked bag will arrive at the carousel within 20 minutes of your domestic flight arriving at the gate. If they fail to deliver, you’ll receive 2,500 bonus SkyMiles.

Given the battle going on between Alaska and Delta, the introduction of this was clearly intended to compete with Alaska, which offers a similar 20 minute baggage guarantee. When Delta first announced the promotion it was done as a trial, and was only available through March 31, 2015.

My guess is that this was a limited time offer so that Delta could see how well they could actually deliver on the guarantee and to see how consumers responded to it.

Florence Y'all Water Tower in Florence, Kentucky

Florence Y'all Water Tower

When a water tower was built next to and denoting the new Florence Mall, it raised concerns about being a large advertisement and thus breaking the law. But that was nothing that a couple of stripes and an apostrophe couldn't fix.

The tower was built in 1974, with the words "Florence Mall" painted on the dome. The Bureau of Highways wrote to Florence's then mayor, C.M. "Hop" Ewing, that the tower was advertising the mall and that since it was much larger than highway advertising laws, the paint would have to be redone. The mayor along with civil staff came up with an admitted "corny, but cost-effective" solution of just repainting the M to make a Y, and then adding an apostrophe to make the "Mall" a "Y'all," Southern American English's second person plural pronoun. The repainting took less than $500 and created a landmark.

While the tower has been repainted over the years, the unconventional fix still remains and has even lent its name to the Florence Y'all Festivals in the community.
