Sure, I’ll Take A Massage With My Day Room!

There's no denying that I'm getting old. I may only be in my mid-20s, but the number of "butt-in-seat" miles I've flown suggests otherwise. I've flown well over four million miles, and there are some things I just won't do to myself anymore, which I would have done without thinking about twice a decade ago.

For example I don't take domestic redeyes anymore, and I don't do super-long layovers between longhaul flights without getting a day room.

As I've mentioned a countless number of times before, I'm soon headed to the Maldives, and decided to fly back on Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong in business class.

It's tough to beat the $1,460 business class fare on Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong.

American AAdvantage Just Made One Shocking Change to Its Terms and Conditions

The American AAdvantage program recently updated its terms and conditions. They added this sentence: To the full extent allowed by law, these Terms and Conditions disclaim any duty of good faith and fair dealing as well as any implied contractual terms or obligations. That’s pretty striking language — they have no “duty of good faith […]

Wyndham Rewards’ Revolutionary Program Changes: Good Or Bad?

Wyndham Rewards is a program that I don't cover very much, largely because I don't consider it to be an especially "aspirational" program. When I earn Hyatt Gold Passport points I can redeem them at the Park Hyatt Sydney. When I earn Starwood Preferred Guest points I can redeem them at the St. Regis Bal Harbour.

When I earn Wyndham Rewards points, I can redeem them at the... well, I'm not actually sure.

I didn't see this coming, but Wyndham Rewards will be radically changing their loyalty program as of May 11, 2015... and it's potentially really good news.

Wyndham Rewards is making three changes -- two are relatively minor, while one is borderline earth-shattering when it comes to hotel loyalty programs:

Why You Shouldn’t Take Advantage of the 25% Bonus Transferring Amex Points to Virgin Atlantic

Can It Make Sense To Pay Two $450 Annual Fees?

Reader @SmellTheTea asked the following question on Twitter:

It's an interesting question, given that both cards have $450 annual fees. In general no one likes paying annual fees, and as consumers we rationally try to minimize them as much as possible.

But I'll also gladly admit that I spend a couple of grand a year in credit card annual fees. That sounds horrible on the surface, though in practice I get more back in annual benefits than it costs me, from free hotel nights to lounge access to airline fee credits.

My Favorite Place in Northern Ireland: Giant’s Causeway

One usually gets to the Giant’s Causeway by way of Bushmills. It doesn’t hurt that there's a distillery in the village that makes that great Irish whiskey. But you don’t need spirits to bring the Causeway to life. It does that fine, all by itself. As I would soon discover, this bit of primordial geology is loaded with spirits of another stripe.

Review: Transiting Jakarta Airport

I wasn't originally going to write about my transit in Jakarta, though it ended up being more of an adventure than I had bargained for.

It was also one of the more challenging transits I've had. I'm a firm believer in always being overly friendly to front-line staff, because I tend to think you get the best results by treating people the way you want to be treated. Well, during this layover I almost lost it. Almost.

My flight from Hong Kong landed at 8:05PM, and my Japan Airlines flight to Tokyo Narita was scheduled to depart at 9:25PM, leaving me 80 minutes to transit. That seems like a comfortable enough connection, though doesn't leave much room for error. I didn't yet have my boarding pass for my flight to Narita, so upon deplaning headed to the transit desk to hopefully get it issued.

WestJet’s Introduces #SmartSeats (April Fool’s Joke)

I'm generally not a huge fan of April Fool's day. It's too much not-so-funny all at once.

That being said, you can always count on WestJet, the Canadian low cost carrier, to come up with a great concept for the day. This year they're announcing #SmartSeats, their new concept in boarding flights. Here's how it's described:

"After years of research and testing, we are excited to announce SmartSeats, a new concept in boarding flights. SmartSeats are guaranteed to change the way people fly. How? Your SmartSeats in the boarding lounge will also be your seats on the plane. Just sit back, relax and let SmartSeats do the work."
