GREAT NEWS! Airlines Can’t Make The Flying Experience Worse Without Losing Customers

I learned a new industry term this week: “passenger burn” While ultimately air travel is frustrating and uncomfortable for many — with tight legroom and packed planes — because that is what consumers are willing to pay for, and they make decisions based on price it turns out that there are limits. Most people don’t […]

Starwood Implements Most Restrictive Cancellation Policy Of Any Hotel Chain

Last October, Marriott announced that they would be changing their global cancellation policy as of January 1, 2015. Not surprisingly, Hilton matched within a month, also for stays starting January 1, 2015.

They were changing the cancellation policy on the most flexible kinds of rates, which previously mostly allowed cancellations until the day of arrival. With this change, cancellations now have to be made prior to arrival in order to avoid any fees. Of course as a business traveler this sucks, since you paid a premium for the flexibility of being able to cancel until the last minute.

So why would hotel chains make cancellations more restrictive?

How To Save Thousands On Southwest Airlines

Every so often Chase offers a 50,000 point sign-up bonus after spending $2,000 within three months on their co-branded Southwest Airlines® Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card, provided you haven't received a sign-up bonus on this card in the past 24 months. The same offer is also available for the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Card. Each card has a $99 annual fee, which isn't waived the first year.

This is a pretty good offer, given that 50,000 points will get you ~$714 worth of airfare. And that's not bad just for applying for a credit card and meeting the minimum spend, even if Southwest isn't your primary airline.

The real potential for value here, however, comes from the potential for earning the Southwest Companion Pass, which can save you thousands of dollars.

Hotel Lounge Trafficking: Hawaii Five-0 Edition

So I'll be the first to admit that I think hotel club lounge access should be more strictly enforced in the US. Outside the US I find hotels are usually fairly strict about access, as an attendant usually asks for your room number to make sure you're eligible for access, not exceeding your guest limit, etc.

However, at many properties in the US, as long as you have a room key that gets you access to the lounge, you can bring in just about as many people as you want. Like, I can't even count the number of times I've seen one person eligible for club access, and they use their key to bring in basically their entire extended family.

Apparently yesterday I was "that" person, as I was called out for bringing guests into a club lounge. And I'm curious if I was in the wrong.
