Hyatt has a targeted 50,000 point bonus offer out. I wasn’t targeted for it. There are also several smaller targeted bonuses out. I wasn’t targeted for any of them, either. Airline Award Ticket Hold Policies

One of the challenging aspects of booking award travel is that award space is often incredibly fluid. Piecing together an award ticket can be complicated, so my preferred approach is to put the long haul flight on hold whenever possible, then add the shorter segments as I go. This takes more phone calls, but I’d…

Lots and lots of extra beds.

Qantas US Flight Changes

Qantas has been undergoing some major restructuring lately due to huge losses. The most profitable aspect of their operations seem to be their flights to the US, given those routes still don't see too much competition from other carriers.

As part of their efforts to improve profitability, Qantas actually added A380 service to Dallas, by cutting A380 service to Hong Kong and retiming their flight between Melbourne and London to create less ground time at Heathrow.

It seems that the international restructuring is continuing, both in terms of tightening up the schedule and in terms of adding more routes and frequencies. The changes include the following:

Hospitality Happens At The Margins

I think it's fair to say that airlines and hotels make money at the margins.

In other words, you have various groups of guests you can "count on," and then it's filling those extra seats and rooms at the highest possible yields that has the greatest impact on your bottom line. That's why dynamic pricing and inventory/revenue management are so important.

One of my favorite things about constantly being on the road is experiencing well executed hospitality. The hotel industry is often referred to as the "hospitality industry," and in theory for good reason. But when you're flying or staying at a hotel, how often do you really feel like a guest as opposed to a transaction?

A Starwood SVP appeared on Bloomberg the other day to explain that 2% of their guests generate 30% of their profits.

Cathay Pacific New Boston To Hong Kong Flight Coming

Last August Cathay Pacific made a game of announcing their newest US destination. They said within a few days they'd announce service to one of the pictured destinations, which included Boston, Seattle, Miami, and Newark.

Their newest destination ended up being Newark, much to my disappointment (because it's not really a "unique" market, since they already have 4x daily flights to New York JFK.

Yesterday Cathay Pacific played a similar game on their Facebook and Instagram, having us guess their latest city. Their first picture made it pretty obvious the newest destination would be Boston based on the "red socks."
