The Last Shell Oil Clamshell Station in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

The Last Shell Oil Clamshell Station

Although Winston-Salem, North Carolina is known more for tobacco than oil, it is home to the last Shell Oil clamshell station in the United States. Located on the quiet corner of Sprague and Peachtree Streets, the station sits abandoned, its two tall pumps now no more than curiosities.

In the 1930s, a local distributor of Shell called Quality Oil built seven stations in Winston-Salem and one in the nearby town of Kernersville. Joe Glenn and Bert Bennett, who had acquired the distribution, erected the clamshells as advertisements; their quirkiness intended to draw customers.

The clamshell stations represented the transformation of a brand into a building, a symbol into a real thing. When Raymond Loewy designed the current Shell symbol in 1971, it had already gone though many incarnations. Although the original 1901 brand for the London-based Shell Transport and Trading Company was a mussel shell, by 1904 the scallop shell was introduced – possibly from the family coat of arms of the company’s founder Marcus Samuel, whose business would merge with Royal Dutch Petroleum Company to form Royal Dutch-Shell Oil. Samuel had a habit of naming his tankers after different kinds of shells, and he had a background importing objects from the Far East, including beautiful shells.

It wasn’t easy to make shell-shaped gas stations. The office and bathroom area were boxed in, surrounded by a bent wood and wire frame, and then covered in stucco. This last station remained open until the 1950s and housed a lawn mower repair business in the 1970s and 80s. In 1976, it became the first individual station in America to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Formerly a regional office for Preservation North Carolina, now the clamshell is a shrine to itself. On the walls inside hang framed newspaper articles about its opening and a clamshell station calendar. Antique black-and-white photographs line the shelves, which also display a teddy bear, old Shell signs, a coffee mug, miscellaneous antique cans, and a tin of vintage Monkey Grip Patch. A coffee table book has been left open to a picture of the station. In one corner sits an antique red container labeled Shell.

Preservation North Carolina still holds protective covenants on the property, so the clamshell will be preserved in perpetuity.

How Starwood Got Hacked Over the Past Week

American Is Replacing Their Unpopular First Class Chocolate Chip Cookie. Here’s Why That Matters.

I read a rumor in my Facebook feed that American was changing its onboard cookies again, and I reached out to see if that was true. A spokesperson told me, “Rumor confirmed. We’re changing cookies.” That’s exciting news, believe it or not, for an American Airlines frequent flyer — both because the cookie they introduced […]

Virgin Australia Drops Fuel Surcharges — Will Qantas and Other Airlines Follow?

Korean Air SkyPass Transfers Returning To Ultimate Rewards

In late November, points transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards to Korean Air SkyPass suddenly became unavailable. There was no advance notice or explanation, which suggested to me that it was temporary, and not a permanent change. Usually when partnerships like this are discontinued, at least some advance notice is given.

A few days after the transfer functionality was discontinued I wrote a post about how it looked like the change was temporary, given that Chase customer service was saying the Ultimate Rewards website would be updated when (not if) the functionality returns.

Then in late December we found out that Korean Air SkyPass transfers would be returning to Ultimate Rewards as of January 2015, though no exact date was provided.

Five Great Bicycle Routes in Europe

Planes, trains, and automobiles certainly provide travelers with an edge when it comes to getting the most mileage out of Europe's dreamy, castle-flecked landscapes. But there's a price to pay: We end up being passive observers, rather than participants in the journey itself. American Can Once Again Book All Etihad Awards

On Tuesday I wrote about how some Etihad Airways awards didn't seem bookable with American AAdvantage miles, which was very unfortunate timing given that Etihad recently started making First Class Apartment award space available from Abu Dhabi to London and from Abu Dhabi to Sydney.

In the middle of last year, there was a glitch whereby American AAdvantage couldn’t see Etihad award availability, and it took almost a month before that was fixed. I was hoping this wasn't a repeat of that saga. Though more than anything I was a bit concerned by the fact that only some routes were being blocked, which suggested to me that it wasn't an IT issue, but rather something more intentional.

Anyway, the good news is that whatever the problem was, it seems to have been fixed. All Etihad Airways flights are once again bookable using American AAdvatange miles.

When I started traveling in 2006, there were no large travel blogs as we know them, sharing economy websites, apps, and few online booking sites for obscure destinations. Review: SLS Hotel Beverly Hills

We had a roughly 22 hour overnight at LAX, so I put a bit of thought into where to stay. On one hand I figured we'd be tired and want to nap, on the other hand I wanted to be somewhere that was walkable (and as much as I love LA, walking seems to be a near criminal offense there based on how few people walk).

My preferred area in LA is Beverly Hills/West Hollywood, since I find it has the most to do (best restaurants and bars, is at least borderline walkable, etc.).

My usual hotel is the Andaz West Hollywood, though for this stay I decided on the SLS Beverly Hills, for whatever reason.

I actually had a quick stay at the SLS Beverly Hills about a year ago, and wrote a review of that stay.

Nothing At All Suspicious About These Blog Comments…

One of the less awesome parts of the internet is the veil of anonymity that so many people take advantage of by writing things they'd never say in person. We've all been guilty of it at one point or another.

The other side of that is that people think they're being slick when they leave a bunch of comments on an old post with a clear agenda. It's why I don't envy TripAdvisor's job for having to weed out fake reviews. Often when I review hotels in smaller cities where there are only a couple of competitors, something like a year later I'll randomly get five new comments over a week on the review bashing the hotel.

But here's a unique one. Yesterday some "random" comments were left on some posts about the Korean Air nut rage incident, all from the same IP.
