Special-needs travelers get a helping hand

Think travel is a challenge? Try doing it with a special-needs child. Jess Wilson knows what that’s like. Her autistic 11-year-old daughter is prone to anxiety attacks when her family is on the road. So Wilson, a disability advocate who lives in Boston, tries to smooth the way with careful planning. But you can’t anticipate […]

I’m Going To The Park Hyatt Maldives Alone(ish)… Oops/Yay?

I know some like ragging on miles/points bloggers for allegedly being obsessed with the Park Hyatt Maldives and Park Hyatt Paris.

I've actually never stayed at the Park Hyatt Paris (and have no interest in doing so), and have only been in the Maldives once, and that was with a friend who had a special rate at a non-points hotel because he's a travel agent.

The Maldives was fine. Don't get me wrong, it would be fun for a romantic honeymoon or something, but if you're like me and are perpetually single/prefer wandering the streets of a city, it's kind of boring. In a post last year about my philosophy on travel, I explained there were certain places I considered to be "Google Images" destinations. I explained it as follows:

Qatar Airways First Class Lounge Doha To Open Late April 2015

Qatar Airways finally began operating out of Doha's new Hamad International Airport last May, after a huge delay.

The airport is pretty spectacular, though still isn't done. It was actually a couple of months before they opened their business class lounge, and their first class lounge has yet to be opened.

While I would take it with a grain of salt, Qatar Airways claims that they'll be opening their new Al Safwa First Class Lounge in late April 2015. Via Business Traveller:

"The property will shortly be rebranded as Oryx Sheraton Skyline London Heathrow.

Al Baker said the airline was in talks to purchase a further three hotels in the US and also the UK, the details of which will be announced shortly."

Review: Sheraton New York JFK Airport

JFK Airport possibly has the least glamorous airport hotels of any major airport (well, along with London Heathrow), so I usually do whatever I can to avoid an overnight here. When I do have an overnight in New York I almost always try to go in the city.

In this case that didn't make sense, though. We had just a quick overnight in New York and it would be cold, so I just wanted to get to the nearest airport hotel.

I booked the Sheraton JFK Airport for $125. That seemed like a low rate, but I guess that's what you get for staying a Saturday night during the first week of the year, when business travel hasn't picked up yet.

For reference, this is a Category 4 Starwood property, meaning a free night would cost 10,000 Starpoints. I value Starpoints at ~2.2 cents each, so the rate would have to be at least $220 for me to consider using points.
