Headed To Beijing? Join Our Google Group

Hundreds of us are headed to Beijing over the next two months thanks to American's business class mistake fare.

So I published a calendar for those headed to Beijing, so you can figure out if anyone is on your flight, headed to Beijing around the same time, etc. After all, in my opinion half of the fun of this hobby is meeting other, like-minded frequent travelers.

There was a lot of discussion in the comments for people trying to coordinate meeting up in Beijing beyond the flights, given how many people aren't on the same flights but are in town around the same time.

Should You Book US Airways Awards Now Or Wait For AAdvantage?

US Airways and American announced their award programs would be combined in the second quarter of 2015, which led to many questions about whether it was better to redeem US Airways miles now or wait. Now that the merger is imminent, Ben asked if I could go through the options again.

First though, let's have a moment of silence for what has been one of the more lucrative (and certainly most entertaining) mileage programs out there.

Which American Express Card Is Best For Everyday Spend?

"Lucky–do you think the everyday preferred is better than the SPG fit everyday spend? One offers the extra .25 mile per dollar while the other offers a lot more flexibility. I can never make up my mind. Your thoughts?"

For years, the SPG Amex was in a league of its own. And it's still a great card, but it has now gotten competition from Chase, Citi, and even other American Express cards.

Will Japan Airlines Resume Tokyo Narita To Dallas Route?

Japan Airlines has done a great job utilizing the Boeing 787 to actually grow their route network. Thanks to the 787, they added routes from Tokyo Narita to Boston and San Diego. On top of that, a few days ago JAL launched 787 flights between Osaka and Los Angeles.

JAL's CEO was asked about potential future routes to the US, and it seems that Japan Airlines is seriously considering adding a Tokyo Narita to Dallas route, via JAL Flyer. Keep in mind that this is a route which they started operating in 1999, and then discontinued shortly after 9/11.

Launching the route would be a no brainer, given the growth we're seeing in Texas, as well as the potential connecting traffic thanks to Dallas being the largest hub of oneworld partner American. ANA recently announced that they'll launch flights to Houston, which is United's biggest hub.

Does This HAVE To Be The Most Direct Way From New York To The Maldives?!

Goodness gracious, this is going to get interesting. I'm soon headed to the Maldives, and I now have my return flight booked, which was my top priority. I had a slight change in plans to my outbound.

Originally I was going to first visit Colombo for a few days, and was trying to decide between a few different airlines.

Due to a commitment that just came up, I'll literally have to fly from the US to the Maldives as efficiently as possible, since I can only leave two days before my check-in date at the Park Hyatt.

So I've been scrambling for different ways to get from New York to the Maldives as quickly as possible.

Review: Qatar Airways Business Class A350 Doha To Frankfurt

I've already written a bit about this flight on the days following the inaugural, as follows:

-- Qatar Airways A350 Business Class Inaugural Flight

-- Flying With His Excellency Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways' CEO

So in this trip report I'll focus mostly on the things I didn't write about in great detail at the time.

I managed to be the first aboard the Qatar Airways A350, and quickly snagged a few pictures of the cabin.

Qatar Airways' A350 features a total of 36 seats. Each seat features direct aisle access, so the configuration is 1-2-1. The forward cabin consists of six rows, then there's the entrance by the second set of doors, and behind that is another three rows of seating.

Fuel Dumping: A Little-Understood Trick to Save Hundreds of Dollars on Airfare

194798561_f024ab66d7_z There’s a fun trick that can help you save hundreds of dollars on your next long flight—but it’s a little complicated and requires a bit of work.Bloggers get hate mail over sharing this tip (I’m not kidding), presumably because some people feel entitled to keep secrets to themselves. In my opinion, the only reason this loophole hasn’t been closed has nothing to do with its public knowledge but rather that it takes effort and attention to benefit from it. Basically, "fuel dumping" is a ticketing strategy to help you strip the fuel surcharges from certain international airfares by adding on an extra, unused segment to the end of the trip.
