Brod Fortress in Slavonski Brod, Croatia
Built on north bank of the Sava River by the Austrian Habsburgs between 1715-1780, Slavonski Brod Fortress was an important strategic centre controlling the main commercial routes towards Turkey and the slowly receding Ottoman Empire.
The fort was designed to accommodate 4000 soldiers and 150 cannons. According to an evaluation of the Brod Fortress resistance, during the classical siege with full capacity channels, it would have taken ten days of preparation for the attacks and 46 days for the enemy to take over the entire fortress.
Although being a military border stronghold, the fortress almost never had the opportunity to prove and demonstrate its combative power. However, there are many preserved fortifications reminiscent of the bygone times and the everyday military life that took place within. In the period from 1945 up until the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990's, the fortress served as accommodation for the soldiers of the National Army of Yugoslavia.
Today, much of the fortress has been abandoned and some of the spaces are dilapidated or have completely collapsed but apart from a few warning signs there is nothing to stop curious adventurers wandering in to explore the many rooms, corridors, and stairwells.

Etihad Airways Award Seats Abu Dhabi To San Francisco
In July Etihad Airways announced a new route from Abu Dhabi to San Francisco, which will be launching on November 18, 2014. The flight will be operated by a Jet Airways 777-300ER. Etihad is presently leasing several 777s from Jet Airways, which I'm guessing are intended to facilitate short term growth until Etihad takes delivery of their new longhaul fleet, in particular the 787. After all, being the fastest growing airline in the world takes planes. ;)
The odd thing -- as I noted earlier in my post about some airlines not releasing award space on new routes -- is that Etihad doesn't seem to be making any award space available on this flight. No matter which date I search, the Etihad Guest website shows the flight as "sold out," even at the highest award level (which usually has near guaranteed availability).

Airlines Not Releasing Award Space On New Routes?
I love staying on top of new airline routes and aircraft changes, in part because I find new routes to be exciting, but mostly because they usually translate into a lot of award space. Typically once routes are loaded into the schedule, there's some amount of award space allocated as well.
For example, in terms of aircraft changes, Japan Airlines recently announced that their San Francisco to Tokyo Haneda route would go from being operated by a 787 to being operated by a 777-300ER. This was hugely exciting news, given that they opened up two first class award seats on every single flight, even over peak travel dates. And it was good news even for passengers in business class, since the 787 features their old business class product, while their 777-300ER features their new business class product.
