Chronicles of Traveling with a Lap Infant

This is the first of a multi-part series of articles chronicling our experiences traveling with our baby daughter, Mila, who was born in January of this year. It is not my intention at all to compete with Mommy Points or any other parent-travel blogger. However, I thought it would be an interesting idea to write […]

Salford Lads' Club in Salford, Lancashire

Salford Lad's Club

Established in 1904 by the man who would go on to found the Boy Scouts, Robert Baden-Powell, the iconic Salford Lads' Club has been keeping mischievous youth out of trouble for over a century, unsurprisingly influencing some of the biggest names in 20th century rock music along the way.

Purpose built by famed architect Henry Lord, the lad's club initially worked to provide an alternative to the roving gangs of teenage toughs that had been plaguing English cities. The club offered activities such as boxing, billiards, a handful of outdoor sports, and even checkers (which at the time had a reputation as a barroom game). Along with a system of similar institutions, a large percentage of wayward youths were given a second chance on the straight and narrow.

The club continued operate into the later 20th century eventually serving as an early practice space for famed musician Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, and possibly most famously serving as the backdrop to the album art from The Smiths album, The Queen Is Dead. The club's history rubbed off on the young Smiths almost as much as their fame did on the club, helping to define the bands image as troubled youth. The club was also home to future Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook.

Given the building's quintessentially English look and its storied musical history, it has gained a well known reputation as one of the most iconic buildings in the country and has also been featured in a number of television shows and, of course, music videos. Today, the club accepts both boys and girls and many of the musicians shaped by the Salford Lads' Club still contribute time and appearances for fundraisers and such. Its not unlikely that the rock stars of tomorrow are there already.

Bonus American Miles With Club Carlson

Club Carlson is offering an extremely lucrative promotion at the moment. Club Carlson members can earn 7,500 bonus AAdvantage miles after two stays at Radisson hotels between September 15 and December 15, 2014. Registration is required by October 15, 2014.

Bonus miles should post four to six weeks after December 15, 2014, and you can only earn the bonus once per AAdvantage membership number (so presumably you can only earn it once per Club Carlson number as well, since you can only register one AAdvantage number per Club Carlson account).

In order to qualify you have to book an "eligible stay," which is a stay of at least one night at a rate that's eligible for Gold Points accrual (that means award stays and points + cash stays don't qualify).

Garuda Indonesia’s First Class — WOW!

Garuda Indonesia is an airline that's undergoing an incredible transformation. They have a not-so-great safety record and had an old fleet, though are really trying to get competitive recently, especially as Garuda Indonesia just joined SkyTeam a few months ago.

Their new 777-300ER looks incredible, with private first class suites and a soft product that surpasses it.

I even linked to a Garuda Indonesia trip report last December, noting how impressed I was.

The pilgrimage of the solo traveler

I’d always traveled alone. Part of it had to do with my difficulty with people. Relationships never seemed to fit me, like a glove without all the fingers.

Qatar Airways Denounces First Class

I've come to an interesting realization over the past few days. Or really it's a rather unfortunate realization, though I guess acknowledging a problem is the first step to fixing it. I'm attracted to people that are walking and talking contradictions. I don't know why, there's something intriguing about them. I'm genuinely curious to hear what they have to say next, because you never know what they'll say next. Maybe that's why I like watching The Real Housewives so much.

This brings me to the most prolific guy in the airline industry, His Excellency Akbar Al Baker. He's the CEO of Qatar Airways, or just "The Chief" as everyone calls him.

Some days I think the guy is absolutely out-of-his-freaking-mind. He says things no one else is willing to say, and sometimes he's dead wrong. Yet at the same time he's a "no-BS" kind of guy. He has an unreal level of attention to detail, and he has no problem throwing shade like the best of them.
