Tons Of Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Award Space!

A couple of weeks ago Virgin Atlantic announced some pretty major operational changes, which mostly involved them adding routes to the US and eliminating routes to destinations in the East (including discontinuing service to Mumbai and Tokyo Narita).

Their expansion plans included additional flights to Atlanta, Miami, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. The odd thing is that while the new routes were announced a while back, they hadn't actually been loaded into the schedule. I had been checking on a near daily basis, as new flights and routes tend to result in more award availability.

While they haven't loaded all of their new routes into the schedule yet, they have loaded the following new services, and for the most part, award availability is excellent:

I’d Like to Share Some Personal Thank You’s — and Related Observations

The Samsung Galaxy S5 really does take good photos, even in low light and even with someone at the controls who cannot do more than point and shoot (and isn’t great at holding steady). And Las Vegas is beautiful at night… from a distance. View from Mix at the Delano Many thanks to Randy Petersen […]

The Happiness of Pursuit Is a NYT Bestseller! (Because of you!)

Yep yep, it’s true… because of our great readers, The Happiness of Pursuit debuted at #3 on the New York Times bestseller list this weekend. I’m so excited! Debuting on the list is harder than ever these days because paperback, hardcover, and ebooks are all combined into “one list to rule them all.” The same…

Review: KLM Business Class 747-400 Amsterdam To Chicago

I boarded through door 2L, and headed straight up the stairs to the upper deck. After flying the 747-8 quite a bit, the stairs on the 747-400 feel quite drab and confined, by comparison.

While the 747-400 is showing its age and the overheard bins looked old, the seats themselves looked fresh, given that this is their new business class product. There were a total of 20 seats on the upper deck, in a 2-2 configuration.

The hard product is actually very similar to the one offered on Air China's 777-300ERs and on United's ex-Continental planes. They're fully flat business class seats at a slight angle from the aisle. At the end of the day it's not my favorite business class hard product, but it's still quite solid.
