@NatGeoTravel: Virtual Photo Workshop

Travel photography is, on the surface, a very simple endeavor. Go to a faraway place, stand in front of something you can't see at home, and take a picture. What's so hard about that? Well, that may well be the recipe for generations of boring family albums. Find out how to up your photography game when you're exploring the world by joining @NatGeoTravel's Dan Westergren for a live photo workshop at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 2.

Five Cards That Will Help You Travel the World Quickly

I receive compensation for many links on this blog. You don’t have to use these links, but I am grateful to you if you do. American Express, Citibank, Chase, and other banks are advertising partners of this site. I do not write about all credit cards that are available — instead focusing on miles, points, […]

American’s New 777-200 Business Class: First Picture

Early last year, American put into service their first Boeing 777-300ER. To me, that plane was really the beginning of the "new"American. If you asked me five years ago what I thought about American, I would have simply said "old," given that more than half of their fleet was MD-80s back then. They've been doing a lot to change that.

Possibly the most exciting part of their new 777-300ERs was the business class cabin, which marked the first time that American offered fully flat beds in business class. And not only were they fully flat beds, but they were my favorite variety of them -- reverse herringbone seats.

These seats really are better than a vast majority of first class seats a decade ago. They're the same seats that Cathay Pacific has in business class.

Stop phoning me! How to end those annoying “charity” calls

Starwood British Airways 10% Transfer Bonus

Apparently this promotion has been going on since September 1, 2014, though I only learned about it today, via an email I received from British Airways Executive Club. Not a huge loss, since it's not an earth shattering promotion or anything.

Through September 30, 2014, British Airways is offering a 10% transfer bonus when you convert Starpoints into Avios. While transfers from Starwood to British Airways can often take 1-2 weeks, it can take 4-6 weeks from the time of conversion for the bonus Avios to post.

The normal transfer ratio is 1:1, and for every 20,000 points you transfer you earn a 5,000 point bonus. That means 20,000 Starpoints ordinarily converts into 25,000 Avios, so through this promotion you'd receive 27,500 Avios. There's no limit to the number of bonus Avios you can earn through this promotion.

On my addiction to trip planning

We’re not flush with cash we can spend on two-week-long romantic luxury trips. But that’s not what matters. What matters is the planning.

American And El Al End Partnership November 1, 2014

One of American's smaller airline partnerships has been with El Al, the largest airline in Israel. Through this partnership you could earn and redeem AAdvantage miles for travel on El Al, and vice versa. I know this was a really useful partnership for some, especially since American never flew to Israel.

It wasn't possible to redeem American AAdvantage miles for first class travel on El Al, though you could redeem for business or economy. El Al was never great about releasing award space -- it was at times virtually impossible to find business class award space -- though the partnership was still better than nothing. And for that matter, even their brand new business class product doesn't look very good.

Here are the Top 10 Ways to Earn Miles — Several Are Quick and Easy

Yesterday I wrote about the 11 greatest miles and points deals ever. Some folks had their own, and there were plenty of amazing opportunities I didn’t add to the list — like how I used to earn 80,000+ miles at a time opening and funding Citibank checking accounts with a credit card (you couldn’t use […]
