Sherlock’s Cheeky Switzerland

Meiringen is the ultimate pilgrimage site for Sherlock fans. Literally. In the story “The Final Problem,” Sherlock (along with his nemesis Moriarty) plunged to his death at Reichenbach Falls just outside the Swiss town.

How Etihad Handled My 14 Hour Flight Delay

As I hinted at on Monday, I just flew Etihad Airways from Seoul Incheon to Abu Dhabi, and had a 14 hour delay. It ended up being my best Etihad flight ever, though I'll have more on that in a separate post.

After having virtually no delays for the past couple of years I've been having an unlucky streak lately, whereby I've had several 4-6 hour delays. However, it has been years since I've had a 14 hour delay.

Anyway, I figured I'd share the story of what happened, since it ended up being pretty amusing... or something like that.

My flight from Seoul Incheon to Abu Dhabi was scheduled to depart at 12:20AM, and I showed up at the airport at around 8:30PM.

The Best Amex Points Transfers by Destination Now That Delta Transfers are Being Capped

American Express Membership Rewards just took a hit with the news that there will be a cap on the number of points a member can transfer to Delta Skymiles each year. Now, I rarely recommended transferring to Delta. Their awards tended to be tougher to get and cost more than those of many other major […]

Delta Eliminates Upgrades On Basic Economy Fares

There's no doubt airlines are in a race to the bottom when it comes to "unbundling" their fares. Airlines think they're being smart with the way they market unbundling -- "pay only for the services you use." The problem is that in most cases they continue to charge the same for the "unbundled" fare, and then add fees on top of that for services that used to be free.

As far as legacy US airlines go, Delta took unbundling to a new level in 2012 when they introduced Basic Economy fares. These fares are even more restrictive than normal non-refundable economy fares in the sense that they don't allow advance seat assignments or changes. However, at the time they were still eligible for upgrades and mileage accrual.

It looks like Delta will be decreasing the benefits on Basic Economy fares in 2015. As of February 1, 2015, Delta Basic Economy fares (booked in the "E" fare class) will no longer be eligible for paid or complimentary upgrades, same-day travel changes, or priority boarding for purchase:

Rebooking Award Tickets During Irregular Operations

I just had a 13+ hour flight delay, which prompted many of you to ask me how to get rebooked during irregular operations.

Whether due to a strike, maintenance, political unrest, or weather, delayed flights can screw up a perfectly good itinerary regardless of whether it's an award ticket or revenue booking. The complication with award tickets is that they are often booked by one airline for travel on partners. US Airways, I'm looking at you. ;)

If it's not the airline that issued your award ticket causing a flight delay, they are much less inclined to assist over the phone. Speaking from experience, operating airlines don't want to make any modifications to an itinerary over the phone if they didn't issue the ticket, as they don't "own" the ticket. This is especially frustrating if you're trying to be proactive and handle a flight delay over the phone before heading to the airport.
