Thirty Years of Fabulous: Traveler Magazine

Over three decades, Traveler magazine has undergone dramatic changes to reflect where, how, and why we travel. In 1984, we sought out the sights; now we want unique experiences. We traveled to vacation; now we want to be transformed. In the past 30 years, we've shot more than 3.4 million photos and published some 36,000. Here we celebrate our anniversary through the camera lens, offering a chronicle of changing times.

Status Match From Hyatt To MGM

Last June a huge partnership went live between Hyatt Gold Passport and MGM M life. Shortly thereafter Starwood and Caesars announced a similar partnership, though it's not nearly as lucrative.

The Hyatt/MGM partnership was a brilliant idea, given Hyatt's lack of properties in Las Vegas. Through this partnership, MGM's properties in Las Vegas are a lot more accessible for Hyatt Gold Passport members. This is true whether you're looking to earn or redeem points. For MGM, the upside is primarily that they're getting a lot of new loyal guests that might otherwise choose a non-MGM property when staying in Las Vegas.

One of the cool aspects of the partnership is that they offer status reciprocity. As a Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond member you're matched to M life Platinum, while as a Gold Passport Platinum member you're matched to M life Gold. Matched status is valid for one year, though you can manually renew your status match after that by once again linking your accounts.

When Your Flight is Delayed or Cancelled, Here’s How to Get Your Credit Card Company to Buy Your Hotel Room and Meals

One of the key strategies you should employ when travel goes wrong is to solve the problem and worry about who pays later, when it’s an amount you can cover — put another way, “self insure.” If your flight gets cancelled, don’t spend an hour fighting with the airline over getting them to pay for […]

It’s okay to hate Beijing

It’s simply a matter of taste. And to my totally subjective palette, Beijing will always taste pretty gross.

Hilton HHonors Increases Account Security

If you've tried to log into your Hilton HHonors account since yesterday, you may have noticed that it now has a CAPTCHA (which I just learned stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart") when trying to log in.

The main reason this matters is because it means you can no longer use an automated service to check your Hilton HHonors balance. For example, you can't use AwardWallet to automatically access your HHonors account anymore. Instead if you try to log in through AwardWallet it will redirect you to the Hilton HHonors page and pre-fill in your details, but you'll have to complete the CAPTCHA.

Did JetBlue Kick Passenger Off For Tweeting?

There's a story getting quite a bit of media attention about a lady that was kicked off a JetBlue flight between Philadelphia and Boston on Tuesday night.

Apparently someone joked about the aircraft's alcohol supply, which made the pilot think they were accusing him of being drunk. Via CNN:

"An hour after JetBlue Flight 760 was scheduled to depart Philadelphia for Boston, a fellow passenger joked about the aircraft's alcohol supply.

Another passenger joked about wishing for a fully stocked bar on the flight, Carter-Knight told CNN affiliate WPVI. The pilot misunderstood the joke and took it to be an accusation that he had been drinking."

Five Mistakes I’ve Made in the Points and Miles Game

We all make mistakes. The important thing is to learn not to make the same mistake twice. It’s even better when you can learn from someone else’s mistakes, and that is what I am hoping to achieve with this article. Below is a list (in no particular order) of five mistakes I have made in […]
