Ethiopian Flying Los Angeles to Dublin Starting June 2015!

In July I posted about Ethiopian Airlines' announcement that Los Angeles would become their second US destination as of 2015. At the time they announced that the flight between Addis Ababa and Los Angeles would stop in Dublin, which seemed like an interesting choice. As usual I never trust these airline announcements until the schedules are actually loaded and the flights go on sale.

Well, much to my surprise Ethiopian Airlines has followed through on this.

Ethiopian Airlines will begin 3x weekly Boeing 787-8 flights between Addis Ababa and Los Angeles as of June 3, 2015. The flight will operate westbound on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and eastbound on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

17 rites of passage for Coloradans

1. Ski the Minturn Mile: It’s neither an epic line nor even a challenging route -- just a cruisy backcountry run that ends near a saloon in Minturn.

UNESCO World Heritage Site #282: Paphos

From the World Heritage inscription: Because of their great antiquity, and because they are closely and directly related to the cult and legend of Aphrodite (Venus), who became the ideal of beauty and love, inspiring writers, poets and artists throughout human history, Paphos is of outstanding universal value. Pre-Hellenic fertility deities were worshipped in Cyprus [...]

Hint, Hint: Be Bold When Things Seem Slow

The creative minds of Flyertalk always keep the miles game interesting even when things are slow. I got a tip several days ago that I can’t elaborate on for confidentiality reasons, but reminds me of the old adage: things are not always what they seem. At times, we veterans won’t step out of our preconceived […]

Harold Warp's Pioneer Village in Minden, Nebraska

Harold Warp's Pioneer Village

Born in the impoverished small town of Minden, Nebraska, boot-strapping businessman (and possible superhero if his name was any indication) Harold Warp worked his way from his childhood sod house to being a millionaire plastics magnate. His hardscrabble rise inspired him to create his Pioneer Village, a replica town that celebrates the rags-to-riches American dream.

Once Warp achieved his millions, instead of buying a leopard or something he instead used his wealth to create a monument to the opportunities America afforded him. Purchasing a number of the historic buildings from his hometown of Minden including its church and the old one-room schoolhouse, Warp had the structures moved and created a new town square that was essentially a living museum. Warp filled the buildings with period artifacts and furniture so that they would feel as though they were plucked right out of time.

After the founding of Pioneer Town in 1953 the site continued to grow larger and more diverse, garnering rare pieces of Americana and building new structures. An exact replica of Warp's childhood sod house was created, a wide collection of automobiles was amassed, and such unique items as Lincoln's sugar bowl and a piece of Edison's original phonograph were added. Each part of the increasingly sprawling attraction was linked by the central theme of American progress. So strong was this focus that Warp mandated that each display be presented in chronological order.

Today the Pioneer Village contains 28 buildings set across 20 acres of land. Each building has its own focus be it automobiles, furniture, or industrial items, all still presented in chronological order, never losing sight of the sense of progress and accomplishment that made Warp so proud.

IHG Into The Nights Promo Terms Changed

In early September I wrote about IHG Rewards Club's Into The Nights promotion, which is their fall promotion. It's valid for stays between September 4 and December 31, 2014.

The promotion is unique in that there are different "tasks" you have to complete in order to "unlock" the bonus points or free night certificates. People were targeted with different offers based on their stay patterns. The promotion was structured in such a way that they were trying to generate incremental business, so a lot of people without many recent stays were targeted with great promotions, while many loyal members received laughably bad offers.

I haven't had a revenue stay with IHG all year, and my promotion looked as follows:

Do UberX Drivers Actually Make Money?

It's no secret that Uber is my one of my favorite innovations for ground transportation. When public transportation in a city isn’t good, I used to get really frustrated by the lack of options and taxi “mafias,” though fortunately Uber has solved that problem in many cities.

Uber Black is the “standard” service and a bit more than a taxi, while they also have UberX, which is usually cheaper than a taxi. And thanks to the instant feedback loop (you rating the driver and the driver rating you), service is excellent across the board, in my experience.

I feel like I understand the economics of Uber Black pretty well. The cost is a bit higher than what you'd pay for a taxi (though flat rates from airports can be a steal, especially internationally), but for that additional fee you're getting a nicer vehicle, GPS tracking, and the convenience of paying through the app.

UberX, however, is another story.
