Air Canada Thinks Their Elites Are Over-entitled. And They’ve Actually Done Something About It..

Air Canada announced changes to elite benefits for 2015. Put another way, Air Canada has shown us what you do when you think that your customers are the problem. I’m not an Air Canada elite member. Air Canada, the airline, runs their elite program while Aeroplan — a separate public company — is the mileage […]

Louisiana, Three Ways: Creole Country

The river town of Natchitoches dates to 1714, when French traders paddling up the Red River from the Mississippi put down roots here, making it the oldest permanent settlement in the entire 828,000-square-mile Louisiana Purchase. It immediately impresses me as a downsized version of New Orleans’ Royal Street, with its filigreed iron balconies, antiques stores, and art galleries.

Stolen Frequent Flyer Miles for Sale on the DarkNet

S. passes along an article about CipherCracks, an individual online selling stolen miles dirt cheap. Dark net marketplaces like Agora and Evolution (where CipherCracks plies his trade) are known mostly for selling drugs, guns and counterfeit money. You can also find bomb materials, porn and hacked credit cards. But CipherCracks is proof that there are […]

Should You Keep Credit Cards After First Year?

I've received a handful of comments on the blog in the last week alone asking how I handle credit cards when the first year's annual fee comes due. The questions are mostly similar to this one, asked by Amy on the Ask Lucky page of the blog:

"Lucky, do you cancel the cards after the initial year? as quite a few of them have annual fees afterwards. I heard that one’s first card should be kept for life, is that so?"

The way I see it, there a couple of separate questions here:

A Metamorphosis in Prague

I was working on an animated film in Los Angeles in 1982 when I was ordered back to Prague by the communist Czech government. I decided not to return even though I knew this meant I might not see my family again. Then, in 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. Now, whenever I visit, I try to swim against time, not to recall the oppressive fortress that used to be Prague but to reconnect with the favorite places of my childhood.

Last night I shared a rare find, that Lufthansa first class award space for 2 passengers at a time is available far in advance even when booking using miles from one of their partner airline programs like United, Singapore, Aeroplan, or ANA. Between mid-January and the end of March more flights between Denver and Frankfurt […]
