This May Be Why New New York – U.K. Flights Make Strategic Sense for American Airlines

Earlier today I wrote about new American Airlines international routes. New York JFK – Birmingham and Edinburgh in the UK and Miami – Frankfurt. They’re also launching a second Los Angeles – London flight at the end of March. One Mile at a Time wrote about the routes as well and comes off surprised at […]

Weekly Review: November 1, 2014

Greetings from sunny Tampa! I've been in Florida the past week visiting my parents and recovering from an exhausting month of travel. I'm leaving tomorrow for a quick trip to Europe, but otherwise have nothing major before I leave on my dad's birthday trip. So you can continue to expect daily trip reports as I work through the backlog.

Now Hiring: Most Glamorous US Flight Attendant Job!

As y'all know I'm primarily an American Airlines flyer, and one of my favorite things about flying them the past couple of years has been all of the new hires. They've hired thousands of flight attendants over the past few years, to the point that roughly a quarter of all American flight attendants are now new hires.

Let me be clear -- I'm not claiming that all senior flight attendants suck and that all new hires are great. That's not at all the truth. But there's no denying that on average the new hires are more enthusiastic, if nothing else (of course that often comes at the expense of being polished/experienced).

And some of them are cute/age appropriate, but that's a different story...

Anyway, that's not the point of this post.

Requiem for AirTran A+ Rewards, the Program That Ends Today

Southwest acquired AirTran, and it’s been a long time in process but finally the A+ Rewards program closes down today. Many folks have already linked their accounts and transferred points. Those that didn’t have their points automatically moved over to the Rapid Rewards program. No doubt at the margins there will be some confusion, folks […]

Buy Air France/KLM FlyingBlue Miles With 50% Bonus

It looks like Air France and KLM's FlyingBlue program is getting into the business of selling miles. Admittedly not quite at the lucrative rates of other programs, but it's at least worth mentioning.

Through December 31, 2014, FlyingBlue is offering a 25-50% bonus on purchased FlyingBlue miles:

-- If you purchase fewer than 40,000 miles, you receive a 25% bonus

-- If you purchase 40,000 or more miles, you receive a 50% bonus

Best I can tell, you can purchase a maximum of 74,000 FlyingBlue miles during the promotion period, which doesn't factor in the bonus miles (for a total of 111,000 FlyingBlue miles)

Are Pets in Cabin Treated Better Than People — Because Airlines Make Big Money on The Fees?

Christopher Elliott writes about a girl flying on Sun Country to and from Los Angeles. in both directions see what seated near a passenger traveling with a dog. The young girl “suffers from pet allergies.” She apparently didn’t say anything on the outbound flight, and suffered from her allergies. She spoke up to the flight […]

UNESCO World Heritage Site #284: Monasteries of Daphni, Hosios Loukas and Nea Moni of Chios

From the World Heritage inscription: Although geographically distant from each other (Daphni is located in Attica, 11 km from Athens; Hossios Luckas in Phocis, 67 km from the capital, and Nea Moni in the centre of the island of Chios), the three properties belong to the same typological series and share the same aesthetic characteristics. American’s New Flights To Birmingham, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, And London!

American has announced four new flights to Europe that will launch in 2015, whereby we're seeing an additional frequency on an existing route, a new route to an existing destination, and two new destinations altogether (at least as far as American "metal" goes).

According to airlineroute.net, reservations for these flights are expected to open tomorrow, Sunday, November 2, 2014.

Let's start with the news we already knew, as I wrote about this new route on Thursday.

American will commence a second daily Los Angeles to London Heathrow Boeing 777-300ER flight as of March 28, 2015, with the following schedule:

Review: Cairo Airport VIP Lounge

First of all, I apologize for the picture quality in this installment. I didn't really feel comfortable taking pictures in Cairo Airport, so used my phone. Not only that, but I tried to make my "snaps" quick and subtle -- so my apologies again.

Anyway...

My Qatar Airways flight was scheduled to departure Cairo at 1:15PM, so I decided to head to the airport at 10:30AM, which I realize was way early. From what I've heard the lounge in Cairo Airport is fascinating, so I didn't want to miss out on any of the fun.

The hotel dropped me off at Terminal 1, which has a unique exterior design.

Three Videos You Must See! Takeoff Over the Superstition Mountains, an A380 Takeoff Viewed from the Cockpit, and a Flying Car

This isn’t new at all but it was new to me, shared by D.R.. The video is a flight over Superstition Mountains East of Phoenix. It’s shot as a B17 takes off from Falcon Field in Mesa, and then flies East over the mountains past Apache Junction and on to Canyon Lakes. Stunning backdrops, gorgeous […]

Air France FlyingBlue January/February Promo Awards — Up To 50% Off

One of the best uses of Air France/KLM FlyingBlue miles is booking their Promo Awards. FlyingBlue publishes these every month, and they offer 25-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal. Back in the day Promo Awards would consistently be for 50% off and would have a good number of options in business class, though unfortunately they’ve devalued the program somewhat since then, and the discounts now vary.

However, there are still some great values to be had. FlyingBlue just published their latest Promo Awards. These are valid for bookings made between November 1 and November 30, 2014, and for travel between January 1, 2015 and February 28, 2015. January and February are usually pretty quiet months for transatlantic travel, so the promo awards are substantially better than usual this time around.

United Squeeze Seats Further and Even Removes a Lavatory, and Other Shocking News

News and Notes from Around the Interweb: Scott McCartney writes in the Wall Street Journal that United has squeezed its seat pitch down to 30 inches (ouch) on some aircraft, although they claim slimline seats – which I find uncomfortable – create an extra 1.8 inches of legroom. United has also eliminated a lavatory in […]
