9 signs you were raised by a French mom

1. You had your first drink before your 10th birthday. Cider is nothing but a tastier version of apple juice and nobody cares if the kids drink some.

7 epic long exposures from Greece

The dead, old tree appearing to float in the perfectly flat water, waiting to sink away and be forgotten. The stillness of it all, I think it creates quite a melancholy image, which is just how I felt when I was making it.

Credit Card Questions and Answers from the Chicago Seminars

It was great fun getting to talk about credit cards face-to-face with the crowd in Chicago several weeks ago. After talking about my past credit-related employment history (auto loans, PMI insurance claims, FNMA, FHA, VA underwriter and mortgage servicer, credit counselor for the local Veteran Administration and drug and alcohol rehab center), I got to […]

UNESCO World Heritage Site #286: Old Town of Corfu

From the World Heritage inscription: Corfu, the first of the Ionian Islands encountered at the entrance to the Adriatic, was annexed to Greece by a group of Eretrians (775-750 BCE). In 734 BCE the Corinthians founded a colony known as Kerkyra to the south of where the Old Town now stands. The town became a [...]

Flying Can Be Frustrating… And That’s Fine…

I'll be the first to admit that I'm somewhat desensitized to people having airport meltdowns. And that's despite the fact that I understand that some people are traveling for much more important reasons than I am, be it a funeral, wedding, birth of a child, etc.

But I get the frustration. I really do. What I don't get, however, are the meltdowns, because they just don't accomplish anything.

But I think I also figured out why I've been somewhat desensitized to all this. I've realized that over the past two years I've had amazing flight reliability. Like, in 2013 and the first half of 2014, I can't off the top of my head recall a single major delay I've had, and that's despite flying 600,000+ miles over that time period.

Another Beautiful 747 Retirement Video

There's no denying that the 747 changed commercial aviation, and that it will always be the "queen of the skies." And there's no denying that the 747 has a special place in lots of peoples' hearts, given how long it has been flying.

The Airbus A380 is bigger, and I prefer it from a passenger comfort standpoint. But I don't get quite the same feeling when boarding an A380 as I do when boarding a 747.

For that matter, I don't think the A380 actually revolutionizes many aspects of commercial aviation. With smaller long range aircraft that are more fuel efficient (like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350), it's tough to justify the whale jet. Ultimately passengers value frequencies and direct flights, and that's an area where the A380 can't compete.

Anyway, given what a gas guzzler the 747 is, we're seeing a lot of airlines retire them, especially in favor of the much more fuel efficient 777-300ER.

Review: Qatar Airways First Class A330 Cairo to Doha

Upon being dropped off at our remote stand I took the stairs up to door 2L, where I was greeted by the friendly crew.

They pointed me left to the business class cabin. Much to my surprise I was the first passenger in business class, despite the fact that I wasn't on the first bus to the plane.

Before I get too far into this report, I think it's worth clarifying what's a rather confusing matter for Qatar Airways on flights within the Middle East. The business class cabin on flights within the Middle East is marketed and sold as first class. So on flights from Doha to Dubai, Cairo, Bahrain, etc., there is no business class cabin. Instead there's only first class, though it features business class seats.

The good news is that since you're technically in first class you get first class lounge access, first class champagne (KRUG!!!), etc. If you're on a paid business class fare you'll automatically be booked in first class on the connecting flights within the Middle East.
